I have a Methodist friend (the one who lost her 5 year old daughter to AML a few months ago) who is interested in the Church and talking about maybe joining.
I would like to send her a book to read about the Church.
Any suggestions? Anything anyone read before joining that particular helped or had a big impact on your decision?

Is she pretty evangelical? I read A Father Who Keeps His Promises by Scott Hahn and that really clinched it for me. But I was a cradle Catholic who had had an adolescent Evangelical conversion. At college I'd been pretty steeped in covenant theology in my Old Testament classes and I was about 80% sold on being Catholic already. I read that book and the whole kept thinking, "Yeah, so? This is all stuff I already believe." Then it just felt like Wham! I got hit with the Real Presence at the end and I couldn't not be Catholic.
Scott Hahn's other books are also great. I think that most of the others are on a particular topic so if she's hung up on one particular questions you could look for that book. And then his conversion story, Rome Sweet Home (co-authored with his wife) is a great read and addresses more of the basic questions about Catholicism.
Since Scott Hahn is himself a convert he really does a great job speaking to Protestants--and evangelicals in particular, I would say--who need everything to be supported by the Bible.
Hope that helps!
Susan

Anything by Scott Hahn. I was raised in a very active Evangelical home, and had no intentions whatsoever of converting to the Church. I picked up a Scott Hahn book thinking I would find out what his arguments were so I could strengthen my position and convert my soon-to-be-husband to protestantism.
Boy, was I "surprised by truth!" Scott Hahn is engaging, easy to read, and incredibly convincing. Obviously .
I'll be praying for your friend!

And since Sarah sorta brought it up.. the stories in "Surprised By the Truth" edited by Patrick Madrid are also excellent.. they give information by telling about other people's conversions.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
No, I don't think she is very evangelical. When her daughter was sick she started to develop a special relationship with Mary. As a mother she felt drawn to Mary. I sent her a miraculous medal when her daughter was sick, and she ended up having her daughter buried with the medal.
I appreciate the recommendations, I'll take a look at the books you recommended!

Then I would recommend Catholic for a Reason: Scripture and the Mystery of the Mother of God. The whole series is very good, but this one explains the beliefs related to Mary. It is very informative.

Another favorite read of mine is John Paul II's encyclical
Mother of the Redeemer. I read this on my journey into the Catholic Church, and I was STUNNED to realize how Biblical the Catholic teachings on Mary were, and also how beautiful.

Thanks for all the great ideas!
I think right now after the birth of her daughter she is struggling with faith a little. She is having a hard time understanding why her daughter died, especially when she and all of us prayed so hard for her to recover.

Sylvia, I will pray for your friend at our rosary tonight. The one thing that opened my eyes to the Church was the Catholic ladies I came across on the internet - their attitude, kindness and the love of Jesus that shone from them in a genuine way which I had never experienced in the protestant church I was then attending. And you sound as if you are being that "living book" to your friend!
