Saint Damien Joseph de Veuster of Moloka'i, priest Optional memorial, May 10.
Catholic Culture
Is now May 10.
Does anyone have any craft ideas planned?
This day so begs for a pineapple upside down cake- but since that can't happen at my house, we might try some pineapple craft instead...
The book Hawaiian ABC would also be nice to read.
Does anyone know of a source for a coloring page?

Older students might be interested in reading this letter by Robert Louis Stevenson, who, although he was not Catholic, defended Fr. Damien's reputation and even predicted he would become a saint. A great movie to watch is Molokai: A Story of Father Damien, but some of the scenes of the leper colony might be distressing for younger viewers, so you should screen it for your family. One scene that particularly impressed was when Fr. Damien had to shout his confession up to a priest on a boat full of people because the colony was quarantined. Can you even imagine? And we think confession is difficult at times!

I have a coloring page that I am working on, but I thought his memorial day was May 10th? I see in his biography that he died on April 15th though so now I am confused. Is May 10th his memorial day until he is canonized and then his feast day is April 15th?

More information from this site:
Before Damien left Belgium for the missions, he visited a shrine to the Blessed Mother. He asked her for 12 years of missionary service. It is interesting to note that it was in his 12th year in the leper colony that he was diagnosed with the most virulent form of leprosy. He lived and worked for 4 more years before succumbing to the disease on April 15, 1889. He was 49 years old. On Pentecost Sunday, 1995,Pope John Paul II declared Father Damien among the "Blessed" and gave him the title "Servant of Humanity." Father Damien's Feast Day is May 10, the day he arrived to serve the Leprosarium in 1863.
Not that he can't be celebrated on both days of course. If I get that coloring page uploaded, I will let you know.

I have the Saints for Young Readers for Every Day book, and that is where I came up with the 15th.
The state of Hawaii has a whole Fr. Damien coloring book you can buy for about $1, but, hmm... kind of late for that. Maybe for next year.
That confession via boat was really amazing... all because the government forbid anyone to visit the island at that time. The Bishop was not allowed to go ashore. Fr. Damien was a brave man. I'm telling you, if I had to shout my confession out over the water in front of a bunch of people, I don't know if it would even happen. How lonely he must have been, too, as the only priest there for so long and all his friends dying around him all the time.
One thing about the saints that strikes me over and over again it that they were/are, to a person, BRAVE. The "I'm totally scared and not sure I can do this but I'm going to try for you, Jesus" kind of brave. That is what I want to be. Not there yet, obviously, but it's something to strive for

I did a quick Google search, and I see that he did die on April 15th, which is when his feast day is celebrated in Hawaii. But officially his day is May 10th in the Catholic Church. He was so good he gets two celebrations! I am going to stay with tomorrow, since that is when it comes up in the book we read each day.

It makes sense that it would be on April 15th. I think it is a special acknowledgment of his sacrifice that they chose May 10th on the liturgical calendar since that is the day he arrived at the Leprosarium. Here is a link to the coloring page.

This is one of my favorite movies. I watch it every Lent and we watched it about a month ago, and then dh and I decided to see if dc would like it.....we decided to try it with them. And, surprisingly they LOVED it......and my girls tend to be "scared" about EVERYTHING and quite sensitive. They really liked the movie. It impressed my 7yo so much that she wanted to re-name her narration blog "Molokai"

I'm wondering when he is canonized if his feast day will become his death date? If I remember when Josemaria was beatified it was a different feast day, then when he was canonized his feast became his death date.
There are some saints that have a feast that is other than their death date.

You are welcome. He is one saint I had on my to do list because the pictures of him are so interesting.
I wonder if I can get that movie from Netflix?

Yes, they have it. Our Blockbusters and Hollywood Videos carry it too. It seems to be pretty "mainstream".

Bumping this up for Monday.
It's SAINT Damien now of course!!
I have printed Charlotte's fantastic coloring page. We colored the Paper dali St. Damien on sturdy cardstock for the canonization and set it up with a stand at the bottom, so we'll get that out and add it to Mary's altar.
I found a cute little CD called Hawaiian playground at the library.
I've searched the archives and Catholic Cuisine but there aren't really any special recipes.
Anyone have favorite Hawaiian foods to recommend?

I've updated the top post, and edited the date, since now it's for May 10.
Mary had a post on Catholic Cuisine with ideas.

Any recommendations for a good biography - I see several if I google. Which is the best? For teens or adults - not a children's version. Thanks.

I'm terribly fond of Damien the Leper by John Farrow. He's the father of Mia Farrow, the actress, and not Catholic, but this biography is very moving and well-done. Both my mother and I have had lasting impressions from this book.

If I remember correctly, the John Farrow version is for older teens and adults only. Even before Fr. Damien left the main island to live on Molokai he had many harrowing experiences with paganism. Then you can imagine arriving on an isolated island with both genders living without any guidance, morals, teachers, etc.
