Okay feeling rather stupid here.  Can someone walk me through today's prayers? Page numbers, ribbon colors...everything. I just can't get this and now my oldest son has asked to start praying this. Help!

Lisa,
Are you using the one-volume set entitled "Christian Prayer" and which of the hours are you wanting to do? There is the Office of Readings, Morning Prayer, Daytime Prayer, Evening Prayer and Night Prayer. Do you want to do all or just a select few? I'll try to borrow my son's one-volume set (I use the four-volume set myself) and walk you through it tomorrow. Another good resource is this book that goes through the Divine Office in detail.

I have the one volume book entitled "Christian Prayer". I'd like to go through all the prayers if you don't mind showing me.

OK, Lisa, let's start with the general idea.
There are seven separate hours for prayer. The purpose of the Divine Office is to sanctify time and to unite oneself with the entire Church in a union of prayer. As a layperson, you may say one, a few, or all of the hours. I suggest starting with Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer, then adding in Night Prayer, then the Office of Readings, and trying to do Daytime Prayer last of all, as it can be very difficult to carve out time during the day. It is important to remember that our daily duty in our vocation as wives and mothers is also a prayer.
Every hour of prayer has a somewhat similar format. Each one begins with a brief introduction, then antiphons and psalms, a long or short reading, and ending prayers. Morning, Evening, and Night Prayer add in canticles with their antiphons and also the Our Father (not for Night Prayer).
Let's do Morning Prayer first, so you can start tomorrow morning. Your book Christian Prayer might have come with a small paper booklet entitled "Guide for Christian Prayer-2009). If not, you definitely want to get a copy of this. The Guide lists the prayers and pages for each day of the year, so turning to March 19th (tomorrow) we see under the date: MP 1109 (707), which tells you that the Psalms for Morning Prayer (MP) are on page 707 and the proper is on page 1109 (because it is the feast of St. Joseph there is a proper, but there won't be one for every day). The proper is the part that changes with the feast days, while the common is repeated on a regular schedule using a four week rotation. So turn first to page 707 and put any colored ribbon in there, and then to page 1109 and put another ribbon, any color, there. In the morning, turn first to the proper on pg. 1109. Now there are two introductory options, but today we will do just one of them. Under Invitatory, you will read the antiphon (omitting the alleluia because it is Lent), then turn to p. 688 and read Psalm 95 there, repeating the antiphon as shown. This introduction is the longer form. Now back to pg.1109. Recite/read Ant.1 (no alleluia) and then turn to p. 707 for the Psalm. Recite the first psalm, and at the end say the Glory Be and then Ant. 1 from pg. 1109 again. Do this for all three antiphons and psalms. Now read the reading on pg. 1109, and the responsory. Read the antiphon for the Canticle of Zechariah, then turn to page 691 where the Canticle itself is written. Read the Canticle, making the Sign of the Cross at the beginning and ending with a Glory Be and the Antiphon from pg. 1110. Pray the intercessions, and you can add your own here as well, then the Our Father, closing with the prayer. At the very end, make the Sign of the Cross and pray "May the Lord bless us, protect us from all evil, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen." Pages 689-694 go over these details as well and also give a slightly shorter version of the Glory Be which is used in the Office.
I think it's going to take a little while to cover all the prayers so it makes sense to you, so how about just working with Morning Prayer this week? I'm going on vacation Sat.-Tues, so if you start tomorrow and then I walk you through Morning Prayer on Friday, too, you can go on your own a few days and make sure you don't have any questions. Once you understand the format of Morning Prayer, the other hours will be a lot easier to do. Does that sound like it will work for you?

btw, you should probably put another ribbon on pg.691 so you can quickly turn to the Canticle. Or, your book might have come with a separate pamphlet entitled "Common Texts" that has the Canticles, Invitatory Psalm 95, Doxology (Glory Be), and the Te Deum used in the Office of Readings. I don't know if you have a new or used book, the new ones come with all these little extras.
