I found it among my books. I have a first grader and younger aged children. I use the Faith and Life for first grade with my oldest. Is the BC for older kids? Does anyone else use this? I always hear about this book as a reference to Catholic education a generation or so ago. Do people still use it? I guess I could just open it and talk about whatever's on the page, huh? I probably don't need to make a big deal out of it. KISS - keep it simple stupid. (OK..so I don't really like that last word but felt compelled to spell out the acronym which I guess means I didn't KISS anyway...)

My three oldest use it. I assign a chapter each week and then we meet together and discuss over tea. They each read from their appropriate level book but fortunately, at least for the first two levels, the same chapters cover the same information just at different levels. I like to call these our "Catechism Teas". The youngest just listens in for now.

We use the Baltimore Catechism. Seton, Kolbe, and Mother of Divine Grace all use it as well. I like the lay out for Religion from Mother of Divine Grace. She intertwines the Baltimore Catechism, Lives of the Saints, Bible, etc. Also, there is a religion book series called "Our Holy Faith" available from Neumann Press. They work in everything for you that MODG does, but all in one book. Martha is correct in that every year repeats the same information, but adding in more depth information appropriate for those ages with each new level. If you have many children, the Baltimore Catechism makes it easy to use as a unit study.

Thanks, ladies. I'm looking at my book right now and I didn't notice that it was a 'level'. It is called the New St. Joseph Baltimore Catechism, No. 2. I'll look at it some more later. I can see how it would be even easier to use once I have a 'real reader'?!?!

We use the Baltimore Catechism No. 2 for 5th grade and up.
There is also the Saint Joseph's Catechism that works nicely for the little ones. (K-2nd grade)
After that, they can use Baltimore Catechism No. 1 which is quite similar to the Baltimore Catechism No. 2, just explained a little more simply.

I am thankful for this thread. I had been eyeing the different Catechism books marib mentions and wondering how and when to use them. I think I saw them at CHC???

Now, to clarify (or confuse!  ) there are three "versions" of the Baltimore Catechism prevalent for purchase and use.... (I have all three, so if anyone has any questions, please ask - I've not used them all, but I do HAVE them)
- Re-print of the original Baltimore Catechism
- St. Joseph New American Series
- The New Saint Joseph Baltimore Catechism
Each one is different:
Original Baltimore Catechism - straight question and answer, divided into lessons on specific topics (ie Confession) and provides a list of vocabulary words with phonetic pronunciation. 3 of the 4 in the series utilize the same numbering system, such that the first one will NOT have all the questions in it (since it's for use with younger children); the other questions are added in as you proceed through the books. The one with the non-matching numbers is because of some changes since the original publication. The final book is for high school or adult use and has full explanations which is great for answering questions that might come up.
The New Saint Joseph Edition - This one has 3 in the set, but also has a "First Communion Catechism" which is numbered "0" (so there are 4...). This one has Chapters on specific topics, with Bible readings and explanation, some project ideas, a practice piece (such "imitate the saints"), the memorization questions as well as questions for discussion, fill in the blank, T/F, etc (2-3 of each for each chapter).
St. Joseph New American Catechism has questions with the answers to memorize and then an explanation for each; then it has fill in the blanks or crosswords, a Bible reading, discussion and 2 practice pieces. The first one does not have the Bible reading or practice.
The last 2 I lised do not have corresponding numbers from one to the next, though the topics correlate from one book to the next.
Two sets also note on the title page a general idea of when to use them (primary grades, middle grades, that sort of thing). The New Saint Joseph does not, but I have my #2 marked to use at approximately age 11-14 (my number 1 is marked as ages 8-10 - these were my interpretations when comparing them to one another and the depth of the coverage - every child is different!). The font is definitely smaller than in number 1 as well and this could be a strain on some eyes (it's not terribly small, but I have had problems in the past with children and font-size).

Where can I find Mother of Divine Grace? It sounds interesting! I really hated just plain memorization growing up and am always looking for a way to make the faith come alive for my children :) Moira Farell's book has been nice for us too.

My daughter made a cd of the Baltimore Catechism #1 Q&A as a memory aid. If you're interested, it's $10. P.M. me & I'll send you one.
We have been memorizing the Baltimore Catechism for years. I use the 1st Communion Catechism for before 1st Holy Communion than I use the #1 pink version. Seton has the older kids memorize from the #2 edition as part of their curriculum but I haven't gotten that far.
I try to read & discuss 1 chapter/week with my kids (ages 10 & under) and then we memorize. They each have a Seton Religion workbook, which they do on their own. I found it closely follows the Baltimore Catechism.
