I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in Mothering.....
I posted separately asking for prayers for the five year old daughter of a friend of mine with is battling childhood leukemia. She has relapsed.
My friend is not Catholic, she is Methodist, and she just shared the below thoughts with me. They really touched me. I would like to send her a medal and a prayer or novena with an explanation to help her continue with her discovery of comfort and power of prayer to Mary in this horribly desperate situation she is finding herself.
Any ideas of what to send?
Here is what she wrote:
I remember watching Mel Gibson's movie about Jesus and the crucifixion, and I cried my heart out at the part where Mary, Jesus' mother, was watching him suffer and at the same time remembering him as a child. That part, even before I had children, touched me almost more than anything else. Because of Jesus' birth, life and death, I know that God the Father, and Mary the Mother, both parents, know what it is to watch a child suffer and die. We as parents can take our lesson from them: crying about the suffering, but knowing that this life is but a temporal state. I am trusting in God and in Mary to carry me, another parent, through this situation, and I will lift my child up in their arms and care according to God's will.

I wish I had an idea. I don't. I will pray, though.

What about something about Our Lady of Sorrows or the seven sorrows of Mary?

Do you think your friend would be receptive to a rosary cd? Something she can play in the car while driving to and from the hospital? When my son was going through treatment, I listened to my cd to and from the hospital. I wonder if she would find comfort in some good Marian music.
Alice Cantrell has some beautiful medals on her website, I love the one with Mary and the lilies and the openwork Mary medal.
You know, when my son was first diagnosed, a friend made a similar comment to me, telling me now like Mary I would watch my child suffer. Your friend and her dd are in our prayers, AML is a tough road.

Thank you for the ideas. Mary, I will check out the website for a medal. I don't know if she would be interested in a rosary or not, but I think it is a good idea. She is actually staying at the hospital with her daughter, sleeping in her room with her.
