Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone here do "Las Posadas"? Our parish does it and it is such a lovely tradition every year! 9 families take a night to host it on from Dec. 16 to Dec. 24. Two children dress up as Joseph and Mary and carry the pilgrim statue of Joseph and Mary on the donkey. Then we all sing and ask for posada, or a place to stay and rest. The hosts finally say yes (after about 5 verses back and forth) and we are all let in to pray a novena prayer and the rosary, sing traditional Christmas (or Marian) songs in spanish between decades, and then end the prayers with the litany of Mary in Latin. Afterwards we all have a snack and drink and get to socialize a bit with eachother. I love it because most of the people do not speak Spanish and they just love the Posadas and do so wonderfully singing the songs! It is a lovely tradition that reminds us that Christmas is comming and helps us to prepare so that the Holy Pilgrims may have "posada" in our hearts. :)
How do you do Las Posadas?

Our former parish had 2 youth group members as the Parents, with Mary riding on a donkey. We would walk to 9 houses in the neighborhood (very Catholic neighborhood), and finally the convent house would give us a place to stay. There was always hot cocoa and cookies afterward.

I miss that tradition.

Oh, and we sang too.

Our parish school does it in the school hall - but all are invited. They set up homes in refrigerator boxes and the children go from "home" to "home". They sing in Spanish - but that is the native tongue to about half our school and parish. We are in San Antonio. There are some traditional treats at the end - some very sweet biscuit-like things I can't recall the name of - but the kids love them.

Our parish did something for the first time this year. We only made three stops, due to space restraints, but we sang the traditional Mexican song and the children carried clementines with candles in them. Our last stop was the church hall where we had hot chocolate with cinnamon, all sorts of goods, and of course a pinata.

The wonderful lady who arranged it all managed to find a six pointed pinata, but explained that traditionally a seven pointed pinata is used to represent the seven deadly sins. The stick you hit it with represents God, helping you to beat away the sins, and finally the candy represents God's grace pouring out on us.

It was fun and a great learning experience. Next year will be even better!
