Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

As MaryM mentioned in Parade of O Antiphon Houses, the O Antiphons start tomorrow (Wednesday, December 17).

I have a post at O Night Divine that explains these liturgical jewels. I fixed some of the bad links.

And I just wrote up a twist to serving symbolic foods for the O Antiphon Days Florence Berger's tradition over at Catholic Cuisine.

Older posts from my blog:

O Antiphons Begin
The Great O Antiphons
Praying the O Antiphons including O antiphons prayer companion and O antiphons prayer companion table printout

I just love this treasure of our Liturgy! And it really brings back some of my best family memories. Besides using an O Antiphon House or Tower, do you provide treats for the days in your home? How do you celebrate these days?

Bumping for December 17!

What are your favorite O Antiphon traditions?

Love,

Well, actually, I just got an inspiration for a new tradition that I am going to start tonight! Driving home from the grocery store is such an inspiring thing...maybe I was inspired because I was ALONE (dh has children at "Chipwrecked" ) and had more than two seconds to THINK...never happens!

So, this is my plan--around the dinner table tonight before we light our Advent candle, we are going to sing the verse of O Come, O Come Emmanuel (from JennGM's nice print out) that corresponds to tonight's Antiphon (O come, Thou Wisdom from on high...), than read together the Magnificat, then sing the verse again as an antiphon. I thought this would be a wonderful, easy way to introduce this part of the Evening Prayer and also teach the children the Magnificat.

We'll see how it goes!

I think that's great, Caroline! I really want to introduce more of the Divine Office to my family, but I think I will hold off a bit more. We have strep throat now running through the family, so we're not really up to snuff to adding new things.

Bumping this up as the 17th approaches. I have been looking for a wooden house like those posted in past O Antiphon parades. No luck so far at my local craft stores. Anyone seen them around?

If your heart is set on the house, I could send you mine. I bought one and never used it (never painted it, although I even have the paint). It never seemed quite right to me. It wasn't balanced or symmetrical. Even if I used 7 for O antiphons and 1 for Christmas, still not right. And I wanted more of opening doors than just turning a block around.

I know, I'm picky. But there it sits and mocks me on my deliberations and indecision.

So, Jenn- how are you handling the O Antiphons then, if you don't mind my asking?

I have been trying to come with alternate ideas since I couldn't find a house.
I thought the houses looked pretty.

One idea I had was to sew a purple banner to hang with spots for each of the seven days, then attach my O Antiphon symbols to it with velcro. I just have paper symbols that I plan to color and laminate to make them more sturdy this year. As the days go by, the banner would fill up.

But that is not much exciting than a house, and I am not sure where I would hang a banner. Thoughts?

The houses are pretty!

I'm not much help. My mom used an O Antiphon Tower that was part of a kit, and I tracked down a used copy to use. It's kind of the shape that the Advent Calendar from Liturgy Training Publications, so round, with windows from Dec. 17-25.

I keep trying to find a way to share the plans, and this year I got an extra copy so I can trace and not ruin ours...but I haven't had a minute to share.

My other approach is to hang the ornaments on our Jesse Tree. I was also thinking they could be hung on our Advent wreath (it's suspended) as the days progresses.

Melinda....what about beautiful christmas ornaments??? I think it was ANNE who did this, but I'm pretty sure it's somewhere in the parade.

Have beautiful (maybe a bit bigger?) ornaments with the symbols on one side and the latin/english words on the other with even the antiphon written....hang up each night in the dark with only tree lights on??? Could be heavenly!

Before hanging they could be "Put somewhere special" in a prominent place....in a nice little basket or something, and then make a big deal of pulling out the basket and hanging the ornament each night.

I keep thinking the pretty printables available would be nice printed on vellum and hung in windows like stained glass.

I solved this by making a pyramid with the days. Like this:

  Ero  X Cras
       X X
                                           &nb sp;    &nb sp;    &nb sp;

I like the symmetry of this better than some of the other that I have seen. Also, when I made mine I learned the hard way that spray paint goes on nicer then using a brush and acrylic paint.   I also used a metallic gold for the box which makes is look more elegant than the matte paint that I was using. I hope my lessons learned can help someone. Truly next to the St. Andrew Novena this has been one of the activities that my kids request EVERY YEAR....like, they are doing it even if I don't plan on it!

ETA: I know I got this recomendation from Jenn in the past. We also have this CD O Antiphons By St. Mark Chior. We listen to the appropriate part on each day....it's really nice!

It looks like you can get an MP3 version at Amazon for $8.99!!!!!!

Yours sounds wonderful, Betsy! Great tips!

For my boys, just singing the appropriate verse for the O Come Emmanuel and pondering the symbols is something they look forward to every year.

This has all given me some great ideas. I might skip the house in favor of some type of ornament after all- just would be less stressful this late in the game than trying to get a house together....

I painted all the symbols on wooden square ornament pieces. Drilled in two holes for a ribbon (so it hangs facing front, not sideways) and we simply hang these one at a time on our Christmas tree. (Which we get on Guadete Sunday and have lights on it... then full on decorate on Christmas Eve)

They are the first ornaments to go on the tree in other words... one at a time. It's a nice, slow build up to full on decorating...

I use the antiphon for the day for copywork also.

I like your banner idea. I had been toying with something similar. What I am doing is pennant style banner with each antiphon being a pendant. I made a paper one for an Advent Mother Night Out a few weeks ago. It turned out really cute. I gave it away as a door prize and forgot to take a picture, so I can't show it. I better get to work on the one for us (which will be fabric).

What we do is super simple. I have a purple ribbon that I tie to a nail in the wall. Each night I untie it and bring it to the table where we have one candle for each night. We light the candle for the night along with the previous candle(s), read some verses, sing the appropriate stanza and then I thread the ribbon through a purple bell and tie it on. Then I have some plain index cards on which we wrote the first letter of the antiphon (so "S" for tonight) and the names as a border around the outside (so tonight would be "O Sapientia, O Wisdom, Wise Counselor, etc"). I slide the card onto the ribbon and it sits just above the bell. Then we tie the entire thing back onto the nail.

I think I made it sound more complicated than it is. It really is simple. I did it quickly one year and it stuck.

Now it is beginning to feel like Christmas!

Michele made a pretty page for the verses to pray and has some coloring pages. Quite nice! Thanks, Michele! I'm just looking for my extra printer paper...our office is a bit rearranged all over the house right now.
