A family member is starting to attend Sunday Mass again, and when we talk on the phone, she has been asking questions about the Faith. She grew up Catholic, attending CCD, was Confirmed....but like most of us in the 70's and 80's, knows very little about Catholicism.
My mom and I want to give her a few good books (or other things?) for Christmas.....
**maybe a prayer book or devotional
**Apologetics book
**liturgical year book or cookbook, as she is quite curious about certain celebrations, feast days, etc. I was thinking "A Continual Feast."
Any specific suggestions / opinions for any/all of the three things listed above?
Other suggestions?

A catechism?
And I really like the Surprised by Truth books.. by Patrick Madrid.. you get so much information in story form.. it's easy to read.
What about a magazine though? Then she'd get a bit more each month.

When I was converting, I really liked the "Catholic for a Reason" book (now there is a series, but I haven't read them all) by Scott Hahn.

I agree, the Surprised by Truth books are what I would buy and Magnificat if possible.

Bill loves This is the Faith which he finds a little more readable than the Catechism, but he loves the Catechism too.
On the lighthearted side for a cookbook idea, maybe Bad Catholics' Guide to Good Living? I've glanced through it, but I think you would have to gauge whether it is appropriate for your family member right now. Some people think it is very funny; others are completely turned off by it. One Amazon reviewer mentioned that the author's favorite movie is Zoolander and to use that as a litmus test.

As far as the Liturgical cooking, I'd say A Continual Feast by Evelyn Vitz would be your best bet.
I also think a gentle introduction to other liturgical traditions would be the Fourniers' books,
Advent, Christmas Epiphany in the Domestic Church
Lent and Easter in the Domestic Church and
Marian Devotions in the Domestic Church
Or the two Sourcebooks from Women for Faith and Family. Both you can see most information online to get a taste of the writing and traditions.
I *LOVE* both John Zmirak's Bad Catholics books, The Bad Catholic's Guide to Wine, Whiskey, & Song: A Spirited Look at Catholic Life & Lore from the Apocalypse to Zinfandel and The Bad Catholic's Guide to Good Living: A Loving Look at the Lighter Side of Catholic Faith, with Recipes for Feast and Fun, but I have to say I read "Bad Catholic" as tongue in cheek. There is great stuff and interesting reading, as you're getting a Catholic lessons in catechism, history, philosophy, culture, etc., but I think you need to know more to appreciate it, if that makes any sense. There are some items that could be considered "shocking", like for the feast of St. Agatha.
But especially the wine, whiskey, etc. one would be great for the Catholic men on your list. I made the mistake of having that as my bathroom reading when I was pregnant last year.
The Year & Our Children: Catholic Family Celebrations for Every Season is still a very good classic.
