I was inspired this morning with a story idea for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception but I need to work out a few details....
So keeping in mind this is a *story* but I do want to be truthful....
Is it *possible* that Mary could have stayed with Elizabeth (the Visitation) until John the Baptist was born?
and..
Does anyone know whether St. Anne and St. Joachim were still living when Jesus was born?
I'd appreciate any help.

In regards to St Anne and St Joachim there are conflicting traditions. One says that St Anne and Joachim had died before Our Lady married. Another tradition has St Anne alive after Our Lord was born. (No mention of St Joachim) If you are writing a story you would have carte blanche to write either way.

Luke 1:56 And Mary stayed with her about three months, and then returned to her home.
John Is Born
Luke 1:57 Now the time had come for Elizabeth to give birth, and she gave birth to a son.
In the Bible closest to me (Catholic NAB), reads as I put it above.... in verse 56 Mary returns home, followed by a title (John is Born) followed verse 57.
Even without the title "John is Born" separating verses 56 and 57....it reads Mary left, then John was born.

Many works of art picture St. Anne with Mary and the Christ Child. Below are some examples:
St Anne with the Virgin and Child 1519, by Albrecht DÜRER
The Holy Family by El GRECO
The Virgin and Child with St Anne c. 1510 by LEONARDO da Vinci
I seem to recall one with Joachim, too, but didn't find it in my brief search.

Hmmm...at the end of the three month visit - Elizabeth must have been very close to birthing - why do you think Mary returned before the actual birth?
And geesh how have I missed that detail all these years!!

Since I don't know the Jewish custom of the time, I'm not sure, but I wondered if it could have been a prescription of time she had to be at home? I'm probably barking up a wrong tree because she traveled to Bethlehem.

Perhaps there was something about women who haven't given birth not attending a birth?

Since the tradition is that John the Baptist was 6months along (that is his feast is celebrated around 6/25) doesn't it also work out that Mary would have been there as she stay "three months"?
Also, I know I've seen writings and videos that show St. Anne as a widow living with Mary and Joseph, and thus with Jesus? But Jesus' early life is pretty minimally covered in scripture, I would think it would be ok to at least say his grandma was around ....
Hmmm ... what about Joseph's parents ... were they there and who are they?

Possible answers can be found in the The Protoevangelium of James
