Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am wondering if any of you homeschool Cathecism without enrolling with your Parish. Is this even possible?

We are currently enrolled in home Cathecism through the Parish. The boys are preparing for Sacraments this year.

Enrollment provides a set of workbooks (for an enrollment fee, of course). The workbooks are fine, but what we supplement with- bible reading, prayers, novenas, picture books, saint stories, etc. seems to be much richer than the workbook pages they complete.

Tracey:
I did a quick search and found these past threads that may be helpful:

Faith Formation Requirements

Do you send your kids to CCD Classes

Interested in NOT doing CCD

CCD and Homeschoolers

We do not do "faith formation" or CCD at our parish. My first dd made her first communion last year, and thanks to many of the ladies here on this board and past threads, I found an overabundance of ideas for FHC prep....stories, bible readings, baltimore catechism, picture books, prayer, crafts, liturgical year, First Communion Notebook.

Our DRE is fine with Homeschoolers "doing their own thing." I know this is not always the case, and is another question.

At the parishes I work at (as DRE), we have some families who register and use our books (it works out cheaper if they want to use those books anyway) - and other families who entirely do their own thing and just go straight to the priest when they are ready for their sacraments. There is one family who has heard of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program that we are using for our 3-6 year olds and our First Communicants - that family would like to utilize the atrium for the purpose of educating the children themselves, but in the provided space - we are working out those details (really, just a scheduling thing and who is responsible for which supplies, etc). But our parishes are VERY supportive of families homeschooling in any of a variety of methods.

The parish where my son and I attend as members is a fully homeschooling parish - they have no religious ed classes as one usually thinks of parish religious ed.

Obviously, I homeschool my son (that's why I'm on the board!) academically and in the religious realm (it's all tied together for us anyway!), but he also attends the religious ed program at the parish (Catechesis of the Good Shepherd - in addition to the sessions that I specifically teach).

My first recommendation would be to go directly to your priest and see what he "wants" for his parishioners. I would think that his main concern is that the children are truly ready before receiving a sacrament and will likely want to have a meeting with the children to determine that readiness - either himself or the DRE. If the DRE is homeschooling unfriendly, then specifically request that he be the one to meet with the children.

just my initial thoughts anyway!

You might contact your bishop and see if he has a policy. Its helpful to know that.

Ours does have one and it is that children must do the sacrament prep at the same time as their peers and its clear from the bishop's statement that he prefers children to be an active part of their parish in terms of this.

I was annoyed at first but now Im glad I set aside my personal bias against the program and tried it out. Its fun for the kids, and fun for me (I teach.)

Its been a great way to get to know people I might not otherwise meet.

My son is making his First Holy Communion this spring. We don't have the option to home school for religious ed and have him receive his sacraments at our parish. Our daughter did one year of religious ed through our parish, and it was enough to decide that it just wasn't the right fit for our family. Fortunately for us, our Catholic homeschool support group is very large, and a local parish lets the kids from our group receive their FHC at that parish, along with a private Catholic school (not a parochial school, but a school actually founded by homeschooling families, using a classical curriculum). So, that is where ds will receive his FHC. We are using Faith & Life and the Baltimore Cathechism, along with living the liturgical year, to prepare him.
