Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have to confess that I have not yet started using this - despite my threads last year. I really want to start with the new liturgical year. I am a little confused as to how to figure it all out. I would really appreciate any advice from anyone who uses the One Volume Christian Prayer.

Thank you.

Marilyn,
I would STRONGLY suggest getting your hands on the book: The Divine Office for Dodos. I recently bought it because I, too, have the one vol. Christian Prayer and couldn't make sense of it. The "Dodos" book makes it very do-able.

It sounds like it's not just me who is being led in this direction! Just last week I bought Christian Prayer and the 2009 Guide to Christian Prayer. Within the next couple days I should be getting the Dodos book. I'm hoping to have enough time before the start of Advent to figure out how to make this the basis of my prayer in the new liturgical year.

Peace,
Nancy

I use Praystation Portable when I can't get to my book. This podcast might also help with learning how to pray the Office.

OK - I just ordered the 2009 Guide to Christian Prayer. (never did use the 2008 one )I have spent all afternoon trying to figure it out - and I think I am almost there. I am going to start with Morning and Night Prayer - and then do the Office of Readings from Universalis when I can. I am going to blog once I have it figured out.

Quick question - are all the Office of Readings readings in the one Volume Christian Prayer?

It does take some time (quiet ) to figure it out. I didn't try to figure it out all at once. I staarted with Morning prayer , then moved on. It also helped to compare what I thought was what i should be doing, with the Universalis website...just to verify that i was on the right track.

I just tried to find the 2009 guide and didn't have any luck....must've been punching in the wrong title or something. Where did you get yours, Mariyln?

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I'll have to check out that Dodos book.

Suzanne - I know what you mean about the quiet I was nauseous anyway - so at rest time shut myself in my room - of course my 1 year old who ALWAYS naps, refused to take one...

I ordered mine from Catholic Free Shipping - together with my favorite John Michael Talbot Christmas cd which I could not find anywhere else.

I sat with Christian Prayer, the little 2008 guide and Universalis up on the screen - and figured out today's morning prayer - took me about 2 hours!

Suzanne - a question for you - how do you use your ribbons (assuming I will still have mine - the baby keeps going for them!)

Also - do you do your Office of Readings from Christian Prayer or elsewhere?

Marilyn,
It's not possible to do all the daily offices with just the one Volume Christian Prayer. The Dodos book addresses this but I don't have it with me now so I can't tell you which officers the one volume version actually has. You've probably figured it out by now anyway. Keep us posted how it's going. I got tired trying to figure it out so just put it down for a while. You've motivated me to maybe make it an Advent project for myself!

I have the magazine Magnificat. Is the morning and evening prayer in the magazine the same as what is in the Christian Prayer book?

I don't think so. We have the Liturgy of the Hours four volume set and when my husband reads it it's not the same as my Magnificat. The Magnificat seems to be a shortened and different version.

I thought I had this all figured. Hmm - maybe not. I did my Morning Prayer this morning using Christian Prayer and the Guide For Christian Prayer 2008 - I did the prayers etc for the Common of the Blessed Virgin Mary. But this did not agree with what is on Universalis - I gues the Memorial may be optional. But then I went to the the Third Week prayers - some agreed but the canticle, short reading and intercessory prayers are not the same as Universalis.

What am I doing wrong? Is there more than one choice a day?

You're not doing anything wrong. Today was the Feast of The Presentation of Mary, so I'm guessing the Guide you were using listed the Common of the BVM specifically for that reason.

I don't know why Universalis didn't match... I didn't think it was an optional memorial, but then again, I don't know where Universalis comes from---maybe it's not United States?

Just a theory.

All I can say to all of you were are struggling with this is to take it slow. And even if you ARE on the wrong page some day for some reason, it's still PRAYER and beautiful ones at that.

(The one volume is the best way to start, IMO. And I'd say once you get the hang of that....then treat yourself to the 4 volumes. But if you get the 4 volumes to begin with, my guess is you will overwhelm yourself.)

P.S. Those Guides? There are two versions---one for the 1 volume and one for the 4 volume, so be aware of that. They are not interchangeable. One year I bought the 4 volume guide, thinking it was the 1 volume, and was sorely disappointed.

Kind of like the time I bought the Bible Tabs and started putting them on, only to realize I hadn't bought the CATHOLIC version. That was a bummer too :-(

Thank you so much. You know I thought the same thing. I had a wonderful prayer time this morning - and was so pleased that I managed to find my way easily around Christian Prayer. If I get the day wrong ocassionally is it actually so wrong?

Marilyn, here is an answer about the ribbons from this previous thread on Christian Prayer:

Quote:

By the way, you can buy a set of ribbons (mine has 5 different colors), and here is how mine are set up:

first one (green) on the section of the Sundays (which shows you which week of the Liturgical Year and also which week of the I - IV that the psalms will be from that week).

second one (yellow) I keep on the page where the Canticle of Zechariah is. The Invitatory Psalm (for Morning Prayer) is two pages before and the Magnificat 2 pages after, so it's a good spot to keep that ribbon.

third one (blue) is on today's (e.g. Thursday evening)

fourth one (red) I keep in the Night Prayer section

fifth one (purple) I keep in the back section where the saints days are...

Thank you Suzanne - I wish I had seen this! The same person was actually kind enough to pm me with her use of the ribbons last week.

I'm lucky to have my husband who did LOH all through college so he is able to set it up and lead us... Otherwise I would be just as lost! But the feast days can be confusing if you're just getting started...I always had a hard time figuring out where to flip to for which prayer etc. But we love it! We have the whole set and it is great especially during the important celebrations in the Church.

Okay - The Divine Office for Dodos arrived yesterday. Today during dd's dance class I'll hit up the fabric store for the white, silver (maybe I'll get gray?), and black ribbons and then get busy making the 16(!) bookmarks recommended. That seems like a lot of prep.work, but I'm just going to go along and not try to second guess the instructions -- I want to learn how it works! So, I'll update as I work through the method part of the Office.

Peace,
Nancy

As I"m working my way through "Dodos", I keep seeing reference to a pre-made set of bookmarks. It sounds like these include hints and reminders about how to pray a particular office. Anyone have these? Where did you get them? I'm up to the point where I am ready to pray Night Prayer every night.

Peace,
Nancy
