For years I have simply read the daily readings for Mass. It really guides one through the Liturgical Year. Other than that, I have done Jeff Cavins' Great Adventure and read 14 books of the Bible in historical order.

I kind of "attack" it in fits and spurts. I generally try to read a whole book within a few days, so that I don't lose my attention span. I particularly love reading the Gospels and Acts all at once - Acts seems so exciting and powerful when read all the way through!

I'm not great at making it a consistent part of my life though. Like I said, fits and spurts.

I subscribe to the Magnificat, which contains every day's mass readings. That way, I'm reading scriptures along with the church, and, like Katy said, it guides me through the liturgical year according to the Church's 3-year cycle.

I've also read the 14 books per Jeff Cavins. After that I started reading Navarre -- I started reading from Genesis, but then I got stuck at Deuteronomy, so I've skipped around a bit since we also have the Navarre Gospels, Epistles, etc. Right now I'm back working on Deuteronomy. It's still a bit slow-going but I'm plodding along. We're also trying to pray the Liturgy of the Hours so we get lots of readings that way, but so far we're not consistent yet.

The days we don't attend Mass as a family I read the Mass readings aloud to the kids.

I try to keep in a Bible study at all times. Currently one on St. Paul so we are jumping all over the letters by Paul. I enjoy Acts as well.

I did Magnificat for four years. Now Hubby and I try to do the Liturgy of Hours readings together or seperate and then share at the end of the day. He likes to pray the Byzantine Office too....but it's more Fathers of the Church and Psalms.

I also subscribe to Magnificat, and I've read (most of) the Jeff Cavins 14 books as part of a parish-sponsored study. This year our parish is offering Jeff Cavin's Adventures in Acts and I have purchased the materials but not attended the study yet. However, since the adult education group decided to repeat the 14 book study this year along with Adventures in Acts, perhaps they'll also repeat Adventures in Acts with whatever study they choose to offer next year. I can hope, anyway!

My protestant pal here told me this trick: Whatever day of the month your watch says, read that chapter of Proverbs. No extra investment in study guides, and you always know right where to pick up if you miss a day.

Later you can add Psalms in a similar way. I think she does 3 psalms a day--1, 31, 61 on the first of the month, for example.

I used to do these!!    Except the Psalms were 5/day - 1, 31, 61, 91, and 121. That way you cover the whole book each month, like with Proverbs. I admit, when I was doing it regularly, it did make the psalms much more familiar to me!
