Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does it include patterns for the child size vestments?

No, it does not. Child-size vestments are only mentioned in Maria Montessori's original works. Sofia Cavalletti found that having the child wear the vestments was a bit distracting, so the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd has miniature vestments. Jennifer (MackFarm) has a "Father Oak" that wears the vestments. In CGS atriums there is usually a faceless stand (because anything and everything distracts the littles) to dress with the vestments of the Mass.

You might try asking on the yahoo group Catholic Learning http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ catholiclearning/ to see if anyone could share a pattern. I know similar requests have arisen in the past.

Thanks Jennifer.

I am aware of Sofia's position on this. I am going through Level 1 training right now. I must say, I am going to choose to disagree. I understand and respect her point, and even agree with it for the most part. Our trainer even added another reason to not let the children wear them: because then do you tell the boys they can and the girls they can't? She said it just gets into too many issues. However, If I am going to take the time to make them I really want my kids to wear them.

Anyway, thanks for your reply. I am a member of Catholic Learning and have not visited in awhile, so thanks for that idea.

Heidi - Here is Father Oak if he is at all helpful. I actually do find that we use him more than the child size vestments I made. It was easier to make vestments in all the liturgical colors for a smaller model. Though we have the child size vestments I made, I find they are a source of bickering during a presentation so I have chosen to leave them out of presentations altogether now. There are times that a child takes them out and uses them on their own, but we do not use them in a presentation anymore. We use Father Oak exclusively.

Oh, Jennifer,
I just LOVE your Father Oak! And I think I can handle those patterns since they are smaller. I like the idea of always being able to display him. My husband can make the wood for me. Thanks so much! Your blog entry is very nice and detailed.

I have yet to make any vestments myself (one of these days I will hopefully learn how to sew!), but my boys Mass Kit came with a Child Size Vestment Pattern.

Our Father's House sells the patterns separate as well for $10.00. Their site describes them as follows:
"Designed for complete beginners. Simple pattern and directions for making a chasuble, alb, stole and cincture. Printed size fits the average four-year-old. Directions included for how to enlarge for older boys. Includes card of Vesting Prayers for the young 'priest' to say as he puts on each piece. My favorite is the prayer as he dons the alb: "Purify me Lord, and cleanse my heart so that, washed in the Blood of the Lamb, I may enjoy eternal bliss."

My boys DO have some of the actual vestments sold from Our Father's House, that they were given as gifts, and they *LOVE* them and use them all the time.

I wasn't trying to tell you to NOT use the child-size, just why it might not be in Moira's.

My first reaction when I read Sofia NOT choosing the child-size was disagreement of her position. Over time I've enjoyed and appreciated the Mass work presentations, how they are in miniature to learn the vessels and vestments, not to reenact the Mass. But that doesn't mean in my home we can't reverently "play" Mass...it's just not an "atrium work". That's where my thinking is now. I welcome both, just for different uses.

At the school where I received my training they have a full time MOntessori school and atrium. Their vestments were fiddleback, because their pastor at the time wore them, so the children were familiar with them. Those were much easier and stayed on much better on the wooden "hanger".

Fiddleback vestments *are* easier to make! I'm in the process of gathering some beautiful silk brocades to make some new vestments because our priest for the Latin Mass wears only fiddleback.

I wonder if I could write to some companies that supply lovely vestments and ask for scraps???

Now I just have to figure out how to fold a piece of black felt to make a biretta to fit on Father Oak!

We have a priest in our parish that wears the fiddleback even for Novus Ordo. I like to have the variety on the altar, it's nice.

Jenn, I understand, and hope I did not sound harsh. I agree with your philsophy on this. I guess part of my first reaction to hearing Sofia's choice was sadness because I was so looking forward to having child-size vestments for my kids. But, the more I think about it and read what you and others have to say, it makes sense to follow Sofia's idea, at least in the formal atrium setting. I love the Father Oak idea for home and that would be easier to implement and even cheaper for now to get started, but I guess I can do both as you suggest- it does not have to be either OR.

Part of why I was asking if the pattern was in Moira's album was because I was torn about buying her album in the first place. It was not really reccommended in the training, but from all I read here, I think her album may have a very valuable place in the Catholic Home. I was thinking if perhaps a pattern was in there it would justify the expense a bit more...and then I could just look through it and judge for myself.

I read on another posy Jen that you went through training and you use her album as acompanion to your other sources. I like your approach and think I will follow. Thanks for all you share. You have really been a helpful contributer to many of topics I am interested in.

Peace,

What a great idea! Please sharw with us all if you find a source that is willing to share. I would pay for shipping. I would think they would be happy to contribute rather than wasting material in the trash. I would not know where to begin to get addresses of who to write to, would you?
