Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi everyone.
I am currently going through Level 1 trainingof CGSand am working on my home atrium. I have the little Mass kit and have made/collected a variety of linens. My husband made a little altar and I found a bench at a thrift shop that I am converting to a prayer table. Now, all I need is the tabernacle and baptism supplies. For the tabernacle I am considering using a large jewlrey box that I found at a thrift store. I am wondering if anyone has any other ideas and pictures to share. For my baptism supplies I considered buying the set from Our Fathers House but thought I may be able to come up with things on my own. I found a beautiful silver bowl with a lid to hold the water. What else would I need? The kit says something about oils. I am not sure how many. Does anyone have the baptism kit? I would love to see close up pictures if you have them. I did read Cay's old post how she did this herself with some things she had around the house. In fact, it was after reading this that sort of convinced me to NOT buy the kit. I guess I am just looking for some kind of "list" of materials needed to take with me to the thrift shop.
Any ideas and pictures would be much appreciated. Thanks so much.

Maybe you could ask at your parish for the oil. I think it is the Chrism oil, my notes are downstairs. You will also need a white garment and a Paschal Candle. When we had a small set up at home, I used a punch bowl and a shell, we had a white garment, the candle. You probably also want a small candle or you could use a baptismal candle.

I think you can put together your own baptism supplies for much less than the one at Our Father's House. You can buy the Paschal Candle kit from Illuminated Ink.

We never had a tabernacle at home. I think the jewlry box will work or you could also find a brass container with a lid.

Mary Chris: WHat do you mean by a white garment? Could you please be more specific?

Thanks for the idea to look at Illuminated Ink for the candle. That will be a fun craft for the kids and I to do. Maybe we will work on it on their baptismal anniversary (They have the same week anniversary which makes celebrating it very convienent!)

I appreciate your input, thanks.

The white garment we have in the Atrium is almost like a small chasuble (I think I botched the spelling) made of felt.   In our home Atrium I used a white gartment that was given to two of our children at their baptism.

I'll have to get my notes, but I think there is a lesson on the white garment or why you wear white on your Baptismal Day.

I am working on organizing my album this week so I'll check the notes. The Illuminated Ink Paschal Candle is fun to make.

Do you have an Atrium at your parish? CGS is the only option for RE at our neighborhood parish until after First Holy Communion. I have done my training there. I teach a level 2 class and assist in a level 3. I have not done any of the level 3 training, the time just has not worked out yet.

BTW, how did your move go? Are you happy with the new area? I have been thinking about you. I think I would love to live where you are.
I may PM you soon, I am looking for a nice spot to sneak away to with my dh when he returns from his deployment. I'm just not sure about the E. Shore in December.

I don't think using the sacred oils from Church would be the best option. You can make your own teaching oils with olive oil (lightly scented) and adding some essetial oils to it. We've found balsam oil to be the closest to what our bishop uses for the Chrism oil smell. Usually the recipe a bishop uses is mainly secret.

Any box that opens from the front would do for a tabernacle. If you have several children you might want something more sturdy. My husband made a wooden box with a arched front door. I spray painted it gold. There is a little hinge on it and also a small knob.

For the white garmet we use one of the baptismal bibs that was given to one of our children. You could use any small white cloth that is child clothing shaped.

Thanks everyone for the ideas.

For the tabernacle, I found a jewlrey box that has 2 small doors that open in the front. They are glass (plastic see through fake glass). I am thinking of painting over them in gold.

Marcia, would you be willing to post a picture of what your husband made?

We have a white felt garment that one of my kids was given at the baptism, so I will use that.

What do you store your oils in?

I have no oils, just bottles right now ;). Mine are small (really tiny) bottles with HC and OC on the bottles in gold paint pen.

My training (and my home atrium) both use a white baptismal gown for the white garment.

The oil containers we use came from the dollar store - I think they are actually thin tall vases, kind of squarish. I had also picked up some cruets for the gestures work but didn't need the caps that came in them - and they fit perfectly into the vase-like things for the oils... I should post my own pictures when I get a chance. I have set up an atrium at one parish in addition to a home one; and now I am finishing up establishing two new ones (one at each parish I work for) - and we are just starting on a level 2 for next year.... For the oils, we use olive oil (unscented in one and balsam added to the second)

It sounds like you've solved the Tabernacle issue - we are using cardboard boxes until the gentlemen who promised us wooden ones are done with them (they're doing other things for us right now though!).

Our Baptism garment was sewn to match the alb for our vestments work (this is what I did at home as well as for the parish atriums) - if I were JUST doing the home atrium with my family only (I had a family day care in the past), I would have just used the family baptism gown. The ones that were sewn just have a cross stitched on the front to differentiate from the alb.

(apparently not everyone is doing "sacred vestments" at level 1 anymore... the trainer for the parish catechists didn't do it, saying it was a level 2 work??? even so, I showed them the work and the 5 year olds are learning about the vestments)

I found a nice Bible and stand for each of the baptism tables that are just beautiful (they are each a little different, but I felt it was important to have a beautiful special Bible at the baptism work for the children to "read" a verse from). We have a tall wide white pillar to which the children add beeswax pieces according to a chart which describes the actions for each set of words (when the priest makes the Paschal Candle at the Easter Vigil) - and a pasting box doing the same thing - one atrium also has a felt box to do the same work since the catechist does not like the children to use the wax pins for the wounds of Christ (she's a nervous one and more accidents in that atrium than any other I've seen!).

I can't find a nice photo of the one my hubby made. And I am not so smart about figuring how how to up load to this forum.   I'll send you a private email with photos if you'd like.

I like the extension work with the Paschal Candle and the pasting box. I think I will suggest that to our Level I and II atrium moms. Great idea.

A wonderful friend gave me an almost complete level 1 Atrium. I am not sure where she got oil bottles.

I did obtain my own Pascal candle. I asked the priest for it after Easter. He was more than happy to give it to me.

Perhaps a 'holy water' bottle to signify that it is a special water used in baptism. I'm sure I've probably seen them they are usually plastic and have 'holy water' printed on them. A scallop shell (symbol of baptism) for scooping the water in baptismal font (bowl will do). Also, depending on the age of your children you will want the prayers and sequence cards of the baptismal rite available (ages 6-9). A Christ candle (paschal candle) and a smaller white 'baptismal' candle so the child can light 'their' candle from Christ's candle would be important and a Holy Bible.
