Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was wondering why praying a Chaplet seems to be less known than the Rosary. I must say that I don't know the history of the Chaplet but recently I have read a couple of entries about praying it. Honestly , it sounds much more doable for children and tired moms . I was considering making a Chaplet for myself and then, if it works out , for my dds too.

What would be the reasons for prefering the Rosary over the Chaplet?
Are there different uses?   Maybe someone has info about it's history.?

Well, there are different chaplets with different histories and different devotions.

The Rosary is a chaplet of devotion to Mary.

The Chaplet of Divine Mercy is a devotion to Jesus as revealed to Saint Faustina.

The Chakra is a chaplet that recites the Jesus prayer.

There's the Fransiscan Crown, or Seraphic Rosary, with seven decades that count the seven joys of Mary.

You could pray the Liturgy of the Hours or over a hundred different litanies. There is a chaplet in honor of Saint Bridget of Sweden and a chaplet dedicated to the Immaculate Conception.

(Most of the above information comes from The Catholic Source Bookby Rev. Peter Klein, a priest in Minnesota.)

I think there are so many different devotional practices because there are so many different people. We each get to pick one that works for us at our particular stage of life. Right now, one of my kids is in school. He gets out about 3:00 so I pray the Divine Mercy chaplet while I'm waiting for him to get his stuff together and get to the car.

I'd like to start the day with at least a decade of the Rosary as a family, but that hasn't happened in years.

I don't have much brain power tonight, but I did have some thoughts on your question.

Chaplets are many and varied, with all sorts of devotions. I couldn't find anything that showed that the rosary was originally a chaplet, but I might not have been doing the right search.

The rosary has become one of the universal prayers of the Church. It's not part of the Liturgy, nor is it a substitute, but over the centuries popes have written about it, saints have promoted it, and many people in every culture pray it. There are indulgences attached to those who pray it. If that isn't enough, Mary herself has promoted it in approved apparitions, and there are 15 Promises given by Our Lady to St. Dominic.

So it's kind of a preferred sacramental over others. I personally look at it as if I'm going to have some private devotions, the rosary is first in prominence and that's the spiritual habit what I want to develop.

I agree. Lately, I've found myself drawn to the Divine Mercy Chaplet. It's message and or image has been popping into my life since high school and I truly think the Lord is trying to tell me to cling to this devotion, especially since I have issues with anxiety which stems from fear which stems from a lack of trust. Engraved on the image is "Jesus, I trust in You."

Hmmm...I don't know why the quote from Loren didn't show up in a beige box.

Thank you all for your input! It embarrasses me to realize (once again) just how ignorant this cradle catholic really is. The wealth of the Church is so , so , so HUGE! DEEP! WIDE! From Chaplets to Ember days....I am constantly learning.

Thanks!
