Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

...questions?

Okay. Need some help.

If Joseph is Jesus' "foster father" than who is Jesus' Father? My first reaction to this was, "God the Father."

But - it was the "Holy Spirit" that "overshadowed" Mary.

So - any ideas? I couldn't just say "God" because I was then told, "but Jesus IS God!"

Do I just go with, "It's a Mystery"? One of my children will be fine with this, the other ultra-literal one will not like this answer one bit.

Laura,
a couple of things I have found useful are explaining how white light is made of the primary colours. Also a hit in our home was how ice & steam are all water.....

God the Father is the father of God the Son. This has been so since the beginning, and it always will be so. This is a clear and definite teaching of the Church.

Catechism of the Catholic Church: The Father

As for the role of the Holy Spirit in the Incarnation of Jesus... it's not something I feel the least bit competent to summarize, but here are some passages from the Catechism:

485 The mission of the Holy Spirit is always conjoined and ordered to that of the Son. The Holy Spirit, "the Lord, the giver of Life", is sent to sanctify the womb of the Virgin Mary and divinely fecundate it, causing her to conceive the eternal Son of the Father in a humanity drawn from her own.

...

722 The Holy Spirit prepared Mary by his grace. ...

724 In Mary, the Holy Spirit manifests the Son of the Father, now become the Son of the Virgin.

Not sure if that can be phrased in a way that will satisfy your children... but I think the relevant point is that the Church doesn't describe the Holy Spirit as a "father," but rather in different terms: as the "sanctifier," the "advocate," the "one who anoints," etc.
