Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Ladies,

Today I was praying the Three Very Beautiful Prayers in the Pieta prayer booklet. (And tonight found out that a family friend passed away...interestingly enough)...

As I was praying them, I was struck with the idea to offer them as a new tradition..a sort of All Saints Day Novena - except that instead of nine days we could say them once a day for the entire month of November.

Would anyone be interested?

If so, I'll type up the prayers and post them here.

Just let me know.

Thanks and God Bless,

Sorry about the abruptness of that last. Dd inturrupted me to tell me she was ready for her bath.

Your idea sounds fine. If you have the time to type them here, I'll pray them with you.

THREE VERY BEAUTIFUL PRAYERS
Which are very useful to a dying person, and should be prayed often as an act of mercy.

There once was a Pope in Rome who was surrounded by many sins. The Lord God struck him with a fatal illness. When he saw that he was dying, he summoned Cardinals, Bishops and learned persons and said to them: "My dear friends! What comfort can you give me now that I must die, and when I deserve eternal damnation for my sins?" No one answered him. One of them, a pious curate named John, said: "Father, why do you doubt the Mercy of God?" The Pope replied: "What comfort can you give me now that I must die and fear that I'll be damned for my sins?" John replied: "I'll read these prayers over you; I hope you'll be comforted and that you will obtain Mercy from God." The Pope was unable to say more. The curate and all those present knelt and said an Our Father, then the following Prayers:

1. Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ! Thou Son of God and Son of the Virgin Mary, God and Man, Thou who in fear sweated blood for us on the Mount of Olives in order to bring peace, and to offer Thy Most Holy Death to God Thy Heavenly Father for the salvation of this dying person...
If it be, however, that by his sins, he merits eternal damnation, then may it be deflected from him. This, O Eternal Father through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Dear Son, Who liveth and reigneth in union with The Holy Spirit now and forever. Amen

2. Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ! Thou Who meekly died on the trunk of the Cross for us, submitting Thy Will completely to Thy Heavenly Father in order to bring peace and to offer Thy Most Holy Death to Thy Heavenly Father in order to free... (this person) ...and to hide from him what he has earned with his sins; grant this O Eternal Father! Through Our Lord Jesus Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in union with the Holy Spirit now and forever. Amen.

3. Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ! Thou Who remained silent to speak through the mouths of the Prophets: I have drawn Thee to me through Eternal Love, which Love drew Thee from Heaven into the body of the Virgin, which Love drew Thee from the body of the Virgin into the valley of this needful world, which Love kept Thee 33 years in this world, and as a sign of Great Love, Thou hast given Thy Holy Body as True Food and Thy Holy Blood as True Drink, as a sign of Great Love, Thou hast consented to be condemned to death, and hast consented to die and to be buried and truly risen, and appeared to Thy Holy Mother and all Thy Apostles and the hearts of all who hope and believe in Thee. Through Thy Sign of Eternal Love, open Heaven today and take this dying person ...and all his sins into the Realm of Thy Heavenly Father, that he may reign with Thee now and forever. Amen.

Meanwhile, the pope died. The curate persevered to the third hour, then the Pope appeared to him in body and comforting him; his countenance as brilliant as the sun, his clothes as white as snow, and he said: "My dear brother! Whereas I was supposed to be a child of damnation I've become a child of happiness. As you recited the first Prayer, many of my sins fell from me as rain from Heaven, and as you recited the second Prayer, I was purified, as a goldsmith purifies gold in a hot fire. I was still purified as you recited the third Prayer. Then I saw Heaven open and the Lord Jesus standing on the Right Hand of God the Father, Who said to me: "Come, all thy sins are forgiven thee, you'll be and remain in the Realm of My Father forever.   Amen!"

With these words, my soul separated from my body and the Angels of God led it to Eternal Joy.

As the curate heard this he said: "O Holy Father! I can't tell these things to anyone, for they won't believe me." Then the Pope said: "Truly I tell thee, the Angel of God stands with me and has written the prayers in letters of gold for the consolement of all sinners. If a person had committed all the sins in the world, but that the three Prayers shall have been read (over him) at his end (death), all his sins will be forgiven him, even though his soul was supposed to suffer until the Last Judgement, it will be redeemed (freed)."

The person who hears them read, he won't die an unhappy death, also in whose house they shall be read. Therefore, take these prayers and carry them into St. Peter's Basilica and lay them in the Chapel named the Assumption of Mary, for certain consolation. The person who will be near death, who reads them or hears them read, gains 400 years indulgence for the days he was supposed to suffer in Purgatory because of his guilt. Also, who reads this Prayer or hears it read, the hour of his death shall be revealed to him. Amen!

Thanks for posting these, Maria. They are beautiful.

Don't forget the Church also has some GREAT and easy ways for gaining indulgences for the Poor Souls in November. Praying for the Dead and Gaining Indulgences in November has it summarized.

The Enchiridion of Indulgences was published in 1968, which revised the amount of indulgenced prayers and works, simplifying it to partial and plenary indulgences, and gives specific norms on receiving them, particularly a Plenary indulgence:

A plenary indulgence can be acquired once only in the course of a day.

But one can obtain the plenary indulgence for the moment of death, even if another plenary indulgence had already been acquired on the same day.

A partial indulgence can be acquired more than once a day, unless otherwise expressly indicated.

The work prescribed for acquiring a plenary indulgence connected with a church or oratory consists in a devout visit and the recitation during the visit of one Our Father and the Creed.

To acquire a plenary indulgence it is necessary to perform the work to which the indulgence is attached and to fulfill the following three conditions:
sacramental confession,
Eucharistic Communion, and
prayer for the intention of the Sovereign Pontiff.

It is further required that all attachment to sin, even venial sin, be absent.

If the latter disposition is in any way less than perfect or if the prescribed three conditions are not fulfilled, the indulgence will be partial only.
I mention the indulgences because I haven't seen a copy of the Pieta in a long time, but when I had a copy, it mentioned the old way of indulgences...like 7 years, or something like that, so it can cause some confusion. It's good to read a refresher on what indulgences are and how you can receive them for you or for others.

Thank you for the great prayers and indulgences for the Holy Souls in Purgatory. I have a special love for them and love to find ways to help them home.

When I was at Adoration some time ago, I found a little book that left a huge impression on me. The title, Read Me or Rue It, sounded like something out of Alice in Wonderland but I read the whole book at one sitting, have told numerous people the stories from it, and make a special effort to offer everything for the Holy Souls in Purgatory.

Here is a link to it online. (I hope I did it right.)
Read Me or Rue It

I didn't notice the prayer of St. Gertude in the book, but here it is. Our Lord promised to release 1000 souls from Purgatory every time it is prayed. We are going to memorize it and pray it for school this month.

"Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those within my own home and within my family. Amen"

An aside on indulgences. Our womderful priest at our last duty station asked me to teach a half hour class on indulgences and Divine Mercy to our confirmation students
just before their confimation. I started by asking them how many believed in Heaven (Everyone), Hell (5 of 60) and purgatory (1). So very sad. Oops, just realized that I have to run to the doctor.
God Bless!

Bump! Today would be Day 3 of Maria's novena.

Thought I would also include some beautiful words of Pope Benedict XI:

OFFER MASSES AND PRAYERS FOR THE DECEASED

VATICAN CITY, NOV 1, 2005 (VIS) - At midday today, Solemnity of All Saints, the Pope appeared at the window of his private study in order to pray the Angelus with the faithful gathered below in St. Peter's Square.

Today's feast, the Pope said, "gives us a taste of the joy of belonging to the great family of the friends of God. ... Becoming saints means fully realizing that which we already are, having been elevated, in Christ Jesus, to the dignity of adoptive children of God."

For those who live in Christ," the Holy Father continued, "death is the passage from the earthly pilgrimage to the heavenly homeland where the Father welcomes all His children of 'every nation, race, people and language.' ... For this reason, it is most significant and appropriate that, in the liturgy, All Saints Day is followed tomorrow by the commemoration of all the deceased faithful. The 'communion of saints' ... is the reality of a family bound together by profound ties of spiritual solidarity, uniting the deceased faithful to those who are still pilgrims in the world. A mysterious but real bond, nourished by prayer and by participation in the Sacrament of the Eucharist."

Benedict XVI then indicated how "in the mystical Body of Christ, the souls of the faithful come together; overcoming the barrier of death, they pray for one another and undertake, in charity, an intimate exchange of gifts. In this sense, the faith also includes the practice of offering prayers for the repose of the dead, especially in the Eucharistic sacrifice, Paschal memorial of Christ, which opened the way to eternal life for the faithful.

"Uniting myself spiritually with people visiting cemeteries to pray for their loved ones, tomorrow afternoon I too will kneel in prayer in the Vatican Grottoes near the tombs of the Popes, which form a crown around the tomb of the Apostle Peter, and I will have a special thought for the much-loved John Paul II."

The Holy Father concluded by requesting that "the traditional visit of these days to the tombs of our loved ones should be an occasion to think without fear of the mystery of death, and to prepare ourselves to face it serenely."
