Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I had spoken with my oldest yesterday morning about attending the FSSP Latin Mass about half-hour drive away instead of our local parish. Because he has Asperger's he didn't care for the change in routine without notice, doesn't like the idea that he doesn't understand Latin, I didn't mention all the time kneeling. We decided we'd try it again for the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin in two weeks, giving him time to prepare himself.

Yesterday before Mass, as we were kneeling in prayer, the music director by default (I hope by default, if they don't find someone to replace the gentleman who left I'll go bonkers) came up to the altar and had everyone practice the responsorial psalm. If that wasn't enough, he went from one side to the other, arms raised, while people laughed and sang. It felt like I was in camp again, the left side challenging the right to sing louder. I whispered to my son, "see, at St. Stephen's they wouldn't do this." (Sorry, its not important, just venting )

My son has been telling me he doesn't enjoy going to Mass at all. He did mention that since the Eucharist was the point of the Mass it should be the focus of our time in the Church. I think he will respect the Latin Mass greatly if he can undersand it because he has a deeper understanding of the faith than my other children who spend time away from home at school, where religion is a 20 min class with fill-in-the-blank quizes. My daughter is a closet spiritually led good girl trapped in a classroom of pre-teens who are more concerned with gossip and boys than anything else. She attended the Traditional Latin Mass with me before and enjoyed it. My youngest wanted to get out and play and found it very confining and boring.

I'd like to give my kids some preparation for the Mass so they aren't just kneeling the whole time wondering when its time to go. I would like to go more often because I don't trust our RE dept in my local parish and my oldest should be confirmed in the spring. Also, the traditional parish has mostly homeschooling families which would be especially helpful should my dd come home for school (which I expect and hope for but dh is very unsympathetic to so we don't - yet). Taking a look online at the translation from Latin to English, however, and I think my kids would be overwhelmed with just how long the Mass is. I'd like them to be able to recognize some parts, maybe even practice a response or two, but don't know where to begin. Their ages are 13, 11, 8. Any ideas?

My oldest has some sensory issues and also some autistic behaviors. We went to the FSSP for years, before moving to a state without it!

First, practice makes perfect. They aren't going to "get it" the first time.

I highly recommend Maria Montessori's book, "The Mass Explained to Children".

I also whisper a lot during Mass to all of my children - "Look, he's washing his hands now." "Look, he's bowing because he's confessing his sins", etc.

Because of sensory issues, I don't take my sp. needs son to High Masses. The incense and the singing overwhelm him.

Our Latin Mass is about the same length as the NO Mass (low mass) - an hour or so including sermon.

I also made Mass cards that show what the priest is doing, and for standing, kneeling, etc. and pass them out to the little one so he knows what to do. I'll pass him a card with a boy standing just befor the Gospel, for example.

HTH!

Oooh, not only does that help, that's brilliant! I'll check out that book. Thanks!

Is there any chance that your son could learn to serve? We have just had a Latin Mass here for the last three months and my three boys learnt to serve and know so much more than the rest of us.

If your son is wanting focus on the Eucharist he will sure get it in the Latin Mass Can you tell we are having a mourning period now we haven't the Latin Mass, oh it is soo hard to go back to a very poorly done NO.

I second Maria's books 'The Mass explained to Children'.
Here is a link to the Latin Mass Society of England and Wales we downloaded the two servers card for the boys to use whilst they were learning. That may help.
