I was going to add this to one of the Epiphany or King's cake threads even though the time of the year is a little off.  I saw this gorgeous crown cake in this month's Family Fun magazine and thought immediately of Epiphany. But when I thought more about it I realized that it would be perfect for many different celebrations throughout the year, so am giving it its own thread.
Epiphany (Jan. 6)
Mardi Gras (Shrove Tuesday)
Queenship of Mary (August 22)
Feast of Christ the King (end November)
Or when looking at the Queen titles in the Litany of Loreto (or others), which is what we do in May.
Does anyone have any other links to lovely crown shaped cakes to include here? Please add them if you do.

Oh you creative ladies!
This type of post is one of the major reasons I come here. My brain simply does not work this way. I also received the Family Fun magazine yesterday and my brain did not even entertain this idea. I used to be an accountant, which explains a lot. 
I saw this book at a friend's house and flipped through it yesterday, thinking of my niece's bridal shower: Confetti Cakes. No crowns, but the principals presented may be useful.

I know there is a crown cake with picture from My Nameday, Come for Dessert by Helen McLoughlin.
A simple cake from a tube pan can easily be made into a gorgeous crown with gum drop jewels and other candy decorations. That was my son's favorite for Epiphany -- it's simple, but here's a picture.
And even easier is to let the cake's shape do the crowning -- Kugelhopf mold and Cathedral Bundt Pan look very much like crowns, and then the pans be used for double duty. For instance, the Kugelhopf cake is a traditional German nameday cake.

Must have a thing for crown shaped cakes, huh?! That would explain my ability to make the connection from the Family Fun magazine, Patty. Not sure if it's a blessing or a curse to think like this.

This one might be easy to do with one of those cakes that comes out a little wonky from the oven!
The easiest one I ever made just had a crown set on top of the cake. That cookie one looks like a challenge I'm going to have to attempt!

Wow. These are great ideas! We went the easy route last time we did "king cakes" and topped frosted cupcakes with Hershey's Kissables. It was for a co-op, so each child got to decorate his own.

Janette, we love those Kissables Special Dark Chocolates. We call them our Advent chocolates as the purple colors are perfect for the season!
