Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Ok, I'm so confused....what's the official verdict here? I know that St. Patrick's Day has been liturgically surpressed this year because it falls during holy week. I've heard that some diocese have been told that they could celebrate tomorrow, even though it's a Lenten Friday. What's appropriate to do at home? When can I make my durned corn beef??

We are celebrating on Sunday. I tell you it is a conspiracy.       No St Patricks's Day!

We were told it's today and and we have a dispensation so we can eat meat ...as for us, we will be celebrating on Sunday as well. We have decided no meat here today.

We're going to celebrate on Sunday - that way Dad can have a bigger part as well.

Melanie, you stated the official thing. St. Patrick is suppressed this year except in a few areas where it was moved to Friday (today).

This is probably a once in a lifetime event. Celebrating Holy Week and the Paschal Mysteries (and Easter WEek) override everything, even two solemnities (St. Joseph and Annunciation) had to be moved, and a solemnity is higher than St. Patrick in this country.

I talked about St. Patrick and read a few books this week. We're not doing a celebration or even wearing green this year. I think St. Patrick himself would prefer to stay out of the limelight and focus on Easter.

But you could make the corned beef on Sunday to share as a family, although it's typically Carling Sunday. I was thinking of making a pot of split pea soup.

My parents are having us (and my siblings and their families) over for corned beef on Saturday. This is the first celebration we've been able to attend in three years, and my mother would be terribly hurt if we declined to come. Oh dear!

I wouldn't worry about it. I didn't mean to come down so strongly, just interjecting what's the "official" stance. Since it's a Solemnity of St. Joseph, it's time to celebrate! So have fun!

To add more issue...
Someone pointed out to me that tomorrow *is* a Solemnity...which is begun with evening prayers...so, in theory, you *could* have corned beef tonight even if you aren't under dispensation, because the Solemnity overides the day of abstinence.

Isn't this crazy? Ah well...and if you were planning to have corned beef tomorrow, run with it, I say. Who says St. Joseph wouldn't like corned beef? After all, he's not Italian either and I don't imagine he every ate a fritta in his life....

I don't mind the abstinence on Friday, but I was actually talking to dh about this very fact. "You know, technically the Solemnity already started. So what shall we have for dessert?"

His reply, "Get behind me, satan."

My reply is I'm just speaking the voice of the church.
