Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Our Diocese (Peoria, IL) is the birthplace and early home of Fulton Sheen. EWTN will be at our Cathedral this Sunday Feb 3rd filming the Mass for his cause. My two oldest boys will be serving the Mass. We have such a gorgeous cathedral, and are so blessed to have Bishop Sheens history right here!
hope some of you can see it!

Hi Lisa:

How exciting! My parents are both from Peoria and attended Spalding and the girls high school (can't remember the name). My grandmother still lives there. I have so many wonderful memories of Peoria! My great, great Aunt Catherine was a good friend of Bishop Sheen. Small world.

Fondly,

ah, yes, Academy of Our Lady!! This is now the office where dh works! (Director of Marriage and Family) We love how everyone here is so proud of their history/Catholic Heritage. I homeschool with many moms who tell the stories passed down from their parents, grandparents, etc. about the traditions of this Diocese. Where does your grandma live/what parish?

Hey Lisa,

It may be too early in the canonization process, but is there anything in Peoria that would be worthy of a pilgrimage in honor a Fulton Sheen? Shrine? Museum?

Thanks,

our oldest son Joe is slated to carry the crosier,(so if you see a curly light brown haired boy, its mine!) over 60 Sheen Family members will be in attendance, and there are 15 boxes that will be "officially sealed" at this Mass! The Mayor (a daily mass going Catholic) declared tomorrow Archbishop Sheen Day for the entire city!
lisa, getting excited!

I watched most of it. I enjoy watching the Fulton Sheen shows that EWTN airs. How was it phrased?   " ...a homegrown, American saint"

My mind wandered a bit.....such a beautiful church!...wow, all the religious men and women....we've never seen real nuns (that I know of) and there were rows & rows. So many alter servers....
I wondered why were the two girls (who had the incense) dressed differently....in blue over white....

we were told that it was requested that those girls serve in some capacity we don;t know who they are (dh works for the DIocese and we are familiar with all the regular Pontifical Servers who were there) so we are thinking maybe they are relatives of Fulton Sheen or something? normally we don't have girls on the altar much at the Cathedral, the Blue I am assuming was to make them more "Marian" . I tried not to let it distract me, overall, I think it was very beautiful. I loved watching them carry in all the boxes...
Didn't the Byzantine Bishop look just like Icons of St Nicholas. We were up in the first balcony, it was just goosebumpy to think we will most likely never participate in another Mass like that in our lifetimes...

The commentator for EWTN said that the girls were relatives of Fulton Sheen.

It was a beautiful Mass and there was a full shot of Lisa's Joe twice I think. Don't worry Lisa, he was paying attention and reverent!

normally they do a great job of matching up all the servers by height, but this time Joe and Calvin (Mitre Bearer) were put together. Calvin's dad, a former Protestant Pastor, then former Episcopalian Priest,(new converts!) was recently hired by our Diocese through the coming home network. So, they had the two Diocescan Employee kids together, which was nice!

I am pretty sure there is a museum in El Paso, IL....Lisa have you been there?

I wondered if we would see Martin Sheen at the Mass... maybe at the Canonization?
