Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We had such a great Advent and Christmas season because of all the wonderful books we read during this time that prepared us and kept us focused on the real Christmas. So I was hoping to do a repeat for Lent and Easter. Any suggestions on picture books and read alouds for this? Two of our favorites were Jotham's Journey and The Christmas Mystery. Anything out there that is similar for Lent and Easter?

Thanks,
Karen

Karen

Hopefully I'll have time to come back and write some more suggestions soon, but I'm currently putting my order together for now here are some titles.

ETA: I also found this list of Holy Week and Easter books.

Karen,

The Jotham's Journey books have been some of our favorites for Advent also. We really like like reading a chapter a night.

For Lent a few years ago we read
The Vinegar Boy

in the same fashion. My kids really enjoyed it. We just took the number of chapters and counted backwards from Easter, started the book on that night.

Thanks for the leads and suggestions! I'm excited about searching for these books! The Vinegar Boy looks especially interesting!

Thanks,
Karen

A Family Journey with Jesus through Lent by Angela M. Burrin is a resource we began using last year. The book begins with the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan and ends with his passion, death and resurrection. In the books are prayers and activities for each day. The publisher is The Word Among Us but it can also be purchased through amazon.com

We have this and really enjoyed it last year, even though I got it halfway through Lent. I'm really looking forward to using this all the way through this year.

I also managed to get a copy of The Way of the Cross by Inos Biffi for fairly cheap on amazon, so we'll be using that for Holy Week as well.

Aloha and Emily

I just had a look a review says the stories are written from a child's view. What are the activities like? Is there any clash with Catholicism. (I can handle that I just like to know before hand, kwim?)

Thanks for the Inos Biffi suggestion.
I now have Vinegar boy sitting in my cart are there any final suggestions??

I really wish there were "Jotham's Journey" type books for Lent. Why doesn't someone here write one?

I will have to look at "Vinegar Boy," as we would like something new.

Right now, with the littles, we are reading A Life of Our Lord for Children by Marigold Hunt, which is very good. We will continue reading that through Lent, slowing down and rabbit trailing if needed.

Every few years, we also use My Path to Heaven, which has very detailed illustrations by Caryll Houselander. The kids love to study the pictures while I read and ask questions. This one sparks a LOT of discussion in my house.

Eager for other suggestions for Lenten books.
