Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I want to buy one this year and cannot decide:
- Marianna Mayer - The Real Santa Claus
- Julie Stiegmeyer - The Real Story of the Christmas Legend
- The Demi Saint Nicholas

Which is your favorite?

The Demi book is really nice. We also like The Baker's Dozen. The St. Nicholas Center sells the same cookie cutter. That's the cookie the kids get in St. Nick morning, and I use the book to match the decorating. It's fun.

Tough question, Marilyn! My first choice would be Demi's book. The three you list really vary in the reading level. Steigemeyer will appeal to the younger crowd and is drawing in the one legend of the dowry and gold coins. The illustrations try to mark the similarities of modern Santa to St. Nicholas.

Demi's illustrations I just love, with lots of gold and Oriental touches. This book has text that is a bit longer than the above book, but a little one can still sit through. It draws on the life of St. Nicholas, many legends, and then brings in the modern day devotions around the world.

Mayer's book has the best illustrations, as they are taken from gorgeous classic art. But like all Mayer's books, the text is lengthy and you might only be able to do one or two pages at a time with shorter attention spans.

And I am very partial to Aaron Shepard's book that Kacky mentioned, especially because the cookies play such a big role in our house, too. But the story doesn't focus on the saint as much as the other books you are listing. On a personal note, I bought the book last year in hardcover and accidentally returned it to the library, never to be recovered again. I'm still paying dues on their copy and mourning the loss of my own.

Mayer vs. Demi? I prefer the Mayer book. Like Jenn said, the best illustrations. I like to read from this book, but dc are still pretty young for it. We read a page or two and they ask questions about the pics.

Thank you everyone. I ended up buying the Mayer and Stiegmeyer ones as gifts (should cover preschooler to 11 year old) and I have got the Aaron Shephard and Demi ones from the library.

I've looked at several and my favorite is "The True Story of Santa Claus" by Paul Prokop.

I just wanted to say THANK YOU for starting this list of books for me. Last year I looked and looked for a good St. Nicholas book and didn't know the titles, so I didn't know what to look for!

My library had 4 of these titles! I am so excited! Thanks again!

I'm so excited, using this list and Jenn's reading list I have actually got a head start on Advent this year and ordered some St Nicholas books.

We already had The Miracle of Saint Nicholas by Gloria Whelan and The Legend of Saint Nicholas by Demi so I choose to add
The Baker’s Dozen: A Saint Nicholas Tale retold by Aaron Shepard
Saint Nicholas: The Real Story of the Christmas Legend by Julie Stiegmeyer
St. Nicholas the Wonder Worker by Anne E. Neuberger

I would have loved a couple of the others but price crossed them off.

Anyone else adding to their collection this year?

I wanted to add A Special Place for Santa to this list. It really helped my kids make sense of everything, while still keeping the magic intact. The art isn't my absolute favorite, but the book overall makes it worth it…

Makes an excellent companion to the famous kneeling Santa ornament...

THANK YOU!

Me and my oldest just read through it on her Kindle Fire and it looks nice. You see the picture and the next page is the text. The Fire is in color so this will work. Lovely story!
