This is what we say...
Oh My God, I am sorry for my sins with all of my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to good I have sinned against You Whom I should love above all things.
With your help I firmly intend to do penance, to sin more and to avoid that which leads me to sin.
Jesus Christ suffered and died for us, in His Name, dear Lord, have mercy on me a sinner.
Amen.

In my diocese kids learn:
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of Heaven, and the pains of hell; but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, Who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.
I learned:
O my God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against You and your Church. I firmly intend, with the help of Your Son, to make up for my sins and to love as I should. Amen.

This is the way I learned it:
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee,
and I detest all my sins, because of Thy just punishment,
but most of all because they offend You, my God,
Who are all-good and deserving of all my love.
I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace,
To sin no more, and to avoid the near occasion of sin,
Amen.

Lord Jesus,
You chose to be called the friend of sinners.
By your saving death and resurrection,
Save me from my sins.
May your peace take root in my heart,
and bring forth a harvest of
love, holiness and truth.
Amen

I'm way too flustered to remember a huge long prayer (my excuse is that I'm a convert so I was never taught an act of contrition -- which has led me to get told off by some strict priests if I mumble something in my own words ) so I just say, 'Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, have mercy on me, a sinner.'

Elizabeth please don't get to upset regarding some reactions . priests are human beings they have weaknesses like all of us remember .
Some like Padre Pio , Fr. Pinto , are very good confessors some are not . The point is you are obedient and follow and beleive in the sacrement of reconciliation
I love confession . It is my second or first fav sacrament
some priests are great with homilies some are not each has thier own gifts and talents .
I was required in formation to have a regular confessor so it was very imortant to have someone with the gift to read souls etc. very well very kind and gentle yet firm too . He is a very old gentle priest worked all his life with aboriginal peoples .He is also a great intercessor
I knew however his health is failing I will eventually need to find another regular confessor . I was worried but prayed on it . The next sunday after I prayed about it my regular confessor was not there his hip was out . I had to approach our new priest . Wow right off that first confession was great . He is an excellent confessor . I've seen him twice now .
The point is we go in having no expectation except that we are to confess , all priests are to be his representation in confession and get this we are forgiven
true reconciliation is total freedom is it not ?
So hang in there it has nothing to do with you being a convert or not plus drop the label already we're catholic thats it nothing more nothing less everyone experiences conversion even the Pope conversion is continuous , ongoing , it never stops
I've got to get to church . Take Care . Much Love , Roxie
