Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I wasnt sure where to ask this...so please move it if it should be elsewhere.
Has anyone had experience with this game or the online version?

Gospel Champions

I was working in a patient's room with EWTN on and I saw a program that was about the online version of this game. I have only this past week allowed my seven year-old to use the computer for the first time and we have no video games whatsoever. Im not a huge fan of video games and I limit my son's exposure to any media source.

When I saw this, I thought it might be an acceptable way to allow computer games to be one of the activities accessible to him in small doses. One thing that bothered me about the program that was featuring it was that they were talking about "taking advantage of the fact that kids spend hours playing video games"...it makes me sad when people talk as if we have no control over what our children do or see or hear...or for how long they are permitted to do something. I guess I wonder if I shouldnt just keep the good thing Ive got going...my son doesnt even ask for video games. He thinks they are for "bigger kids". On the other hand, at some point he should be introduced to the computer and learn how to use it, and this program seems quite informative and could be a positive tool for learning.

So, Id like to hear from anyone who has seen it in real-time or who owns it or subscribes to the online version. Im thinking if we get it and play it together, we will both learn something.

Any input is appreciated.

Heather

Online version ---looks really neat but pricey.
The online version is meant for parishes or schools to purchase. I wonder if a group of homeschoolers could get this and distribute it among their families too?

It is solid, etc. but I find computer games are not all that effective in imparting information. The faith questions are not directly connected to the game so it is relatively easy to ignore.

We were given free samples from our parish and use the free stuff. I'm not sure I'd purchase it - but this is coming from someone who really, really limits computer and other media time and is definitely not a computer game fan. We just cannot afford the eyestrain for one and for the other, my boys, in particular seem like they could easily become addicted to the computer games. Guess it might be better than the lock-on and other air-combat games the older boys play (Christmas gifts from family) but then I don't see them really caring for it. My 5 yo loves it.

That is very helpful information, Janet, thank you.

Hi there!

You wrote: guess I wonder if I shouldnt just keep the good thing Ive got going...my son doesnt even ask for video games. He thinks they are for "bigger kids". My thinking is, intuitively I think you're "keep the good thing...going" is the right way to go. True, at some point, he will need to learn how to use a computer---but learning how to use a computer and playing video games on a computer are two different things. We use a computer for word word processing, spreadsheets maybe? Knowing how to play a computer game is not something everyone needs to learn. And knowing how to play a video game doesn't mean one knows how to 'use' a computer... I think they are two different things.

In my opinion, if your son shows interest in computers, start teaching him computer things...a computer doesn't have to be perceived as a game or toy. It is utilitarian. Since he is not badgering you for computer games or the like, I say, be grateful and keep that going!

The whole video game/game boy/thing is a pet peeve of mine. I really see no practical benefit from them. My mom once said (in response to my complaining about my 11 yr old niece playing with her Game Boy to the detriment of conversation or interaction last Thanksgiving Day)..."Well, it's good for her eye/hand coordination" and I just busted out laughing! My mom can put a positive spin on anything!

That is very funny!

So is archery, basketball, darts...and catching chickens around here!
Thank you for your insight, it is most appreciated. The school my son used to attend was anti-computer-exposure until middle school, when they felt the children had the capacity to understand how a computer works, and that it was not just a box that did things for you. Maybe I will seek out some people who really understand computers and let him take an old one apart with them as an intro to computers, instead.
