Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I still have no idea how to post pictures on the forum so I will have to reference you to my blog.

I wanted to use my grandmother's collection of Funeral Mass cards to help focus our attention on the Holy Souls for the month of November so I made a little display for our fireplace mantle. You can see it here:

All Souls Decoration

Someone suggested that it could be used with holy cards for All Saints Day. I might switch out the cards on All Saints Day and replace them with the Mass cards on All Souls Day. Elena had an wonderful decorating idea for All Saints Day that I really love:
Elena's holy card tablecloth

Any other ideas for decorations?

I found in the grocery store, in the ethnic foods section, some very plain candles, called Yahrzeit candles. These are apparently used in Jewish homes to mark the first anniversary of a family member's death. They say they burn for 24 hours. I googled "Yahrzeit" and learned that the candle is lighted at sundown on the evening before the person's date of death, and then allowed to burn itself out, at approximately the following sundown.

Not exactly a decoration, as they are perfectly plain white candles in a jar. But it seems very compatible with All Souls Day, at least to me. We are planning to light ours at our morning prayers on All Souls to commemorate and pray for the souls in Purgatory.

Peace,
Nancy

Matilda,

I love your display!! Great topic.... last year I made an "All Souls Banner" craft project with the children that turned out to be a big success if anyone is interested.

I love the idea of using the funeral cards on All Souls Day!! What a perfect use for them besides being bookmarks in my bibles!

Thanks for sharing. i like the Simplicity pattern you referenced on your blog, too. Maybe one of these years I'll blow the dust off of my sewing machine!

Do you have a family cemetery nearby where you could make tombstone rubbings from the stones of family/friends. Those could be hung on the walls as a reminder to pray for those souls during the month. Even if you don't have any family gravestones you could still pick some random ones - that is what we have done since we live far from family cemeteries. We have always just done ours on newsprint, but here are instructions for one that can be done on non-fusible interfacing for more of a fabric banner.

Here is a pretty quick project we did after Mass this morning.

I think we found a new decoration for All Saints!

For our Liturgical Craft Club this month we did several simple crafts for All Souls/Day of the Dead - paper tissue flowers, papel picado (cut paper banners) and memorial frames. The kids had a great time!

EDITED: New link to crafts.

Those memorial frames are lovely. I also enjoy Jeanette Winter's artwork in the Day of the Dead book and that was a lovely way to capture it.

You ladies had some great ideas that I am going to save for next year! (although I might be tempted to do that picture frame sooner- those were quite lovely!)

I have a rewrite on my blog about All Souls Day including some of our favorite resources and also some great pictures I was able to take at my in-laws cemetery last summer. I love cemetery art!

Since we all seem to be stockpiling ideas for next year, don't miss this thread that Mary G. posted with a link to a lovely All Souls Remembrance Tree.

Reviving this thread as All Saints & All Souls Days approach so everyone who hasn't seen this will get some great ideas. I love all the ideas - it was fun to reread them and I'm hoping to incorpate more ideas this year. And I'm also here to ask for assistance. There was another idea that someone had pictured on a blog that I saw last year. I was hoping it would be linked in this thread but it isn't.

What I'm looking for had three levels of pictures, maybe on the wall and on a table in front of a wall - some sort of depiction of the three parts of the Church (Church Militant, Church Suffering, and Church Triumphant). Any ideas whose blog that was on?

Was it me, Mary?

We set up a Communion of Saints wall every year.

Why, yes it was. Thanks. See I knew it had to be someone's blog who I read all the time, just couldn't remember who. And now your great idea is linked to this thread for future reference, too.

Thanks again.
