Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

A woman contacted me from reading my blog, looking for a particular song to teach the Liturgical Calendar. She wrote:

I was hoping you could help me locate the song that is used to teach the children the liturgical calendar. My girls learned it many years ago (when they were each 3), but they can no longer remember it. I would like to use it to teach my traditional catechism class the liturgical calendar. The only thing that I can remember is "purple is for preparation" and "white is for celebration." I have searched the internet, but nothing comes up for the song.

Does anyone know the song to which she's referring?
TIA,

This is how we sing it...

Purple and green and red and white
are the colors of the year

Purple and green and red and white
remind us of the light

Purple's for preparation
White is for celebration
Green is for ordinary time
Red is for Pentecost

Purple and green and red and white
are the colors of the year

Purple and green and red and white
remind us of the light

Yes, that's the song from the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd called "The Liturgical Colors Song" by Holly Tosco.

Purple and green...red and white are the colors of the year.
Purple and green...red and white remind us of the light.
Purple is for preparation;
white is for celebration;
green is for the growing time,
red is for Pentecost.
Purple and green...red and white are the colors of the year.
Purple and green...red and white remind us of the light.

You can buy the booklet of songs with musical annotation with a cd that includes this from Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. It's in the first book, Sing with Joy.

Also, there's a book/cd set of atrium songs. Then she could hear the tune. The name is slipping me right now.

Jen,
Is the CD and booklet Sing With Joy worth the $29.00? And what about the 2nd CD and booklet for the older age range? Is that one also worth the $29.00.
Thank you.
Love,
Margaret

I had the same question...is it? It seems quite pricey.

God bless,
Christine

I'll be honest. I didn't buy it for a long time because of the price. I had an amazingly good find at a used book sale of almost new booklet and cd for $3.00, otherwise I wouldn't own the first one. That gave me an opportunity to evaluate the songs and product. I don't own the second because of the price.

I'll be honest, I don't really like all the songs in the booklet, and don't plan on incorporating them. The cd is short and sweet, with children singing the songs, usually no accompaniment. It's not a "sing-along" cd. The musical notation in the booklet is just the melody line. For the price, it's not worth the one song I want to use, the Liturgical Colors Song.

But that's just my humble opinion. I view the atrium as the tool to help the young child to enter into the more fully into the Liturgy, particularly the Mass. With that in mind, I find a disconnect with some of the current songs. I think most of the songs should be more linked to the Mass--use of more hymns and chant to illustrate presentations. I am actually trying to piece together some appropriate material to accompany various presentations.

I was bolstered when I read this quote from The Montessori Elementary Material by Maria Montessori:

Among the songs which we offer to the children, the greatest favorite proved to be the syllabic Gregorian Chant. It is something like a very perfect form of speech. It has a conversational intonation, the softness of a sentence well pronounced, the full roundness of the musical phrase. The examples given here have almost the movement of the scale. (The example is the chant for Advent, Rorate Caeli)

Many other verses of the Gregorian Chant have, like these, proved to be the delight of the Montessori Elementary School of Barcelona. There the children are especially keen about this very simple music which they like to play on the piano, on their plates, Xylophones)
or on their monochords.

So the atrium can provide not only the musical link to the Mass, but also help in music education and appreciation. And I'll continue on my soapbox that teaching music through chant is excellent, and can be done through the Ward Method.

ETA: I guess I should have mentioned I find the songs a bit "dittyish". I have seen children respond to GOOD music, and don't need dumbed down ditties. Is it okay to use them? Of course. I just don't think they belong in the atrium. And I've had several catechists agree with me.

And since I'm a little useless this year with the pregnancy and baby coming, I actually am sending my son to an atrium this year. So maybe someone else has an opinion?
