In searching about tabernacles I've come across posts where people say they've made their own instead of buying. I'd really love to have a tabernacle to go along with our Mass kit. I'm trying to focus on implementing Moira's albums this, and the presentations including the tabernacle are upcoming in my plan.
But. We had to buy a new water heater this week . And today, to top off an already very expensive week -- one of the front wheels fell off our lawn tractor. I think the unexpected purchase of a new lawn tractor is in our very near future. Water heater and tractor in the budget, beautiful tabernacle out of the budget.
Would any of you DIY-ers be willing to post a picture of your handiwork? I'm a very visual, craft-impaired person, and every bit of guidance helps. Thanks!

Patty, I bought a little armoire jewelry box (with front opening doors) from a garage sale and painted it gold. It looked very nice. I no longer have it so can't post any photos but perhaps the idea will help.

I did the same thing with a jewelry box that I bought from Michael's/AC Moore. I suggest that if you have a ciborium, measure the ciborium to make sure it will fit inside -- because we had to get another one once we bought the taller ciborium!
Then we spray painted ours too (our new larger one is waiting to be spray painted). It doesn't have a key, but it has a latch! And with paint and box it was under $8.

Ours is just a box opening to the side, covered with gold wrapping paper.

Well, no one sells a tabernacle anymore so even if you could afford it, it is not available - thus we are all forced to be DIY. We scrounged around a bit looking for something to use - until my dh came up with our safety box - you know those fireproof ones for keeping important records. We are turning this into our tabernacle - plan to spray paint it with the gold, line the inside with some sort of velvety fabric and maybe even make a curtain to pull open and shut. The box even has a lock and key already. Also, we will add little rubber feet so it doesn't tip over or anything as it was designed to lay flat and open on the top. We will stand it on the side and open it at the front. I haven't actually made it yet, so don't know how it will turn out. Will let you know when we actually finish it - but I have to do the science kingdom charts and the reading kits first. I have enough of the other CGS material for many, many presentations before I have to have a tabernacle.

I was disappointed when I went to buy one this year and found that they were no longer available. I'm going to use Maryan's idea (I think) of a wooden box from Michael's. I'll glue a wooden cross to it and spray paint it gold. Then put felt or velvet inside. I have all of the supplies and I'll post pictures when I get around to doing it.

I didn't realize that! I saw at OFH there weren't any on the site anymore, but I figured it was an inventory thing.
Thanks, everyone for your thoughts. You've given me a way to narrow down the aisles I'll need to try in the local craft store, and that's a wonderful thing! Gold paint, wood aisle, paper mache aisle. I can handle this!
