Hello to all of you, this is my 1st post! I just wanted to know if you can use the Catholic Mosaic with older kids. I have a 4,2 and a 13 yr. old and would like them to do something together. Will this work without the older one getting "bored"?

Here's what I have-
Girl- almost 13
Girl- 11
Boy- 9
Girl- 7
Girl- 5 1/2
Girl- almost 4
(and a baby, almost 1)
We all do Catholic Mosaic together. I have my older girls do written narrations, sometimes illustrated. If I can find something more at their level about the saint or topic, I will assign further reading. Sometimes it is a jumping off point for a little geography study.
My littles either narrate or we go through the discussion questions orally. We almost always use one of the enrichment activities or they inspire me to create some other kind of craft or project. We try to make our own holy card for each saint that I keep in those little cheap photo albums for each child. We all do some copywork.
The books are so lovely. Many of them have great depth to them that sometimes leaves my older children pondering more than my littles.
Hope this helps...Welcome to the forum!

Welcome, Cheryl! My dc are not older, so I'm not speaking from experience , only my thoughts.....
I get so much from these books, that I would imagine that it would be wonderful for teens to do Catholic Mosaic.
It seems like there would be many tangents that an older child could go on with these books...whether it's religious, art-related, geography, history, etc. Picture books are wonderful that way. Like Maria said, there are so many things to ponder. I often wonder if I'm doing Catholic Mosaic for my dc or for myself!
You could also have the 13-yr-old "in charge" of doing Cath Mos with the littles. She/He could read the book and Cath Mosaic suggestions ahead of time and then prepare a few fun things for them to do.
HTH,

This is kind of what we'll be doing this year. My 12yod will read the book to the 9 and 6yo, then I will help her with doing the activities with them.

My children are 12, 12, and 14. I have only had the Catholic Mosaic for over a year, but we love it. We usually sit down first thing or after lunch and read the book and discuss the questions. The books are so beautiful ... we all learn something new (including me)! And I am taking the books and the Catholic Mosaic with me to Wales. It is such a treasure!

I tell my dh it's like buying brain food for the dc. We have to feed their minds as well as their stomaches. (Edited to add): In this case it's a chance to feed and nourish their souls.
In reference to your question, I've heard from many people who have said Catholic Mosaic works better, in ways, for their older children than for their younger ones.
In the upcoming Christmas Mosaic , on the layout floor as I speak, I made a conscious decision to take note of the pre-K books as I came across them. That way parents will know which are better for little folks and which are appropriate for older children.
But even the books that work better for older ones have lovely art work that littles can enjoy.
My ds was 12/13 when I was using my Mosaic findings in our hs co-op. I had him help me with the presentations. And, I must say, I think the parents got the most out of the books and presentations.
Welcome and thanks for inquiring, Cheryl. Let us know how you like it.

Hi Cheryl - I am using CM with all of my children together - aged 15, 14, 13, 11, 10, 9, 7 and 5 - we all love it.
We have found some of the books especially to contain messages that go far beyond what 'age' the book may have been written for, and they have led to extensive discussions. 'The Giving Tree' is still being talked about!
I am amazed of the deep truths that can be presented in a child's book.
God bless,
Linda.
