My husband and I have talked it over and decided to give up coffee for Lent. My girls plan to give up all drinks but water and milk.
What are some of your plans for Lent?

I'm giving up coffee, too! My husband is going to exerciese each day rather than give something up. My kids are giving up gum for all of Lent and sweets on Fridays. I like the idea of giving up all drinks but water and milk! Last year they gave up TV, but they don't really watch much anymore. Courtney

I gave up coffee Alice, as a New Year's Resolution. And I have two words for you: Adagio Teas. www.adagio.com I don't even WANT coffee anymore. Come to think of it, that was a Lissa recommendation, too.

We have our standard "denials" each Lent..........and then we often add others.
As a family, we give up meat, sweets and treats, including all beverages that make us happy.....like hot chocolate and soda (do not have it much anyway), my favorite morning teas, videos and DVD's, unless educationally needed (we do not have any TV or cable/DISH), secular reading unless required by educational needs, secular music---we just do spiritual or classical music.....and we try to keep noise levels down.......like no radio in car or house.
I want the kids to FEEL and experience a very different attitude during Lent, compared to the rest of the year. As Americans........there is not much self-denial that happens on a regular basis.....though as Catholics, I hope we do better than the Average American........and so, as Holy Mother Church gives us this time.......I try to take full advantage of it.
We used to give up play dates...........but we do not have very many friends these days........and the kids used to give up computer games......but, it is silly to give up something you never do anyway
I usually restrict my computer
time somewhat......like none til after 12noon......or 6 pm........still discerning for this Lent...I better hurry!
Chari...........not mentally ready for the start of this Lent for some reason
ps......my MARDI GRAS is going out to lunch with a friend to a fancy restaurant........sans children! I am so excited!

LOL Alice, I am giving up coffee too! I was going to ask for prayers -- I know it will be difficult for me!
I'm cutting the "screen time" hours in half for the kids since we've been overdoing it since Christmas vacation.
My oldest son is going to try a modified fast on Fridays (he's 18 and this is the first year I would let him try this since he's already pretty thin).
My second son is giving up all video and computer games.
I'm not sure about the other kids yet.
In general, we try to pray more and eat more simply during Lent. I save the baked desserts for Sundays and try to avoid buying junky foods.
Great topic

Well I am going to try and really do Flylady! Also exercise everyday. I am thinking about giving up chocolate and other sweets. We are as a family going to give up take out and eating out.
The children are still working out what they will give up.

I try to do something sacrificial, then several sacrifical things as they come to my heart as well. Then I try to do other things that are positive toward building my relationship with Jesus.
For two years, I gave up hand held Yahtzee. You'd have to know how addicted I am to it to know just how much of a sacrifice that is!
This year though, I don't feel the attachment to it like I did (perhaps because I did sacrifice it for two years), so I'm giving up listening to a favorite local talk radio show. For me, this will be very difficult, as I listen to parts of it every day (when I have time here and there between things).
Then like I said, there are lots of things I also do to try to make my faith more holy, and to follow the Lord more closely.
You can tell your kids faith is growing as they sacrifice for Lent too. Our oldest this year is giving up popcorn. He eats it every day, and it's one of his most favorite foods in the world! I almost FELL on the floor when he announced that to me!
My dh never tells me what he's doing. He says he wants it to remain private. He's a quiet sort of guy with a huge faith!
May we all, whatever the Lord leads us to do, be blessed in our sacrifices, and in all we give to Jesus as we seek Him more closely during Lent, and prepare for the glorious Easter season!

Here is a funny.
The boys and I were talking about what to give up and I mentioned I might give up diet coke.
Well, the next day I went to the grocery store and I am doing this thing called "Grocery Game" where you have info of when to use coupons and you can really stock up on stuff. So I stocked up on Diet Dr. Pepper which I usually don't drink, but hey, for good price I might one day.
The boys unloaded the groceries and saw my stockpile of diet dr. pepper and ran in the kitchen saying, 'MOM! You didn't plan to give up diet coke just to replace it with diet dr. pepper!!" We had a good laugh...
Nice this year.. I had a talk with the boys to see how they were doing with Lent.. was it sinking in what the sacrifice was about? I am a convert and we are learning. I felt from their answers that it was sinking in. God is good.

Our family is giving up treats (we know what they are when we see 'em!) We don't consider ourselves treat eaters but the truth is, they've infultrated our eating more than we would like to admit.
We will be talking about what we are giving up as individuals tomorrow.
We will also be talking about our internal fast tomorrow.
More later

Our internal fast will be to develop the habit of "doing what is hard or least liked, first." This ties into our work towards being better stewards of our time. The children and I each made a list of tasks that aren't being done well or in a timely fashion. Then we ranked them according to our distaste for them. It was fun to see how someone may dread making their bed while someone else may enjoy making their bed but dread putting their clothes in the hamper . It also helps that mom is joining in on this as well. Number one on my list is to catch up tomorrow on some volunteer work that I have put off doing. Boo hoo...I will need to finish it before I log on here tomorrow!
Love,

Angie, I think that this is a wonderful idea! We have already chosen our Lenten sacrifices -- as a family, give up sweets/treats (except on son's bday), Daily Mass and Stations 1xwk. We added personal sacrifices/additional meditation, etc too. This is written on purple slips of paper placed in the center of our crown of thorns on dining room table.
Your idea is so inspiring and simple, though, that we will follow your suggestion as a family today. I think that it will help us -- or at least me -- keep our focus where it needs to be, and maybe a sacrificial attitude will be more in-grained by the time Lent is over. I'm interested in seeing what gets ranked first/last on our lists. One of my least liked chores is definitely ironing...what a wonderful opportunity to iron everything in Tim's closet!

My husband and I decided a few years ago to not necessarily give up things during lent, but to try and do more of the sacrificial acts and charitable works to show the kids that our actions are following Christ's teachings. Now granted this is not always as easy as giving up something special, but having just come off advent and doing good works in wait for Jesus's birth, we are trying to really instill acts of love and charity in the kids in a similar fashion for lent. I LOVE the idea of doing the least favorite things first, I think we'll start that tomorrow!
Happy and peaceful lent to all!
