Hi everyone:

I wrote in the Prayer forum that I was asking for prayers for a confused friend (who doesn't think she's confused). She is trying to defend her break from the Catholic faith to a Pentecostal church. While I find her well-spoken, she doesn't seem to comprehend the depth of the faith that she shunned. She may not even realize that by her questions and challenges, she is actually *deepening* my faith in Catholicism. God must have noticed that I needed a little push.    

I have found some books in the church library that I've used but I find slightly lacking in content. Patrick Madrid's Where is That in the Bible? is very useful, however it doesn't cover some of the more nit-picky (I don't know how to say it in a kinder way) questions my friend has. The other book I found is called The Catholic Sourcebook. This one has lots of neat blurbs on saints, symbols, holidays, you name it. However, it sometimes completely ignores some things. Neither of them address the traditions of the Catholic church very well, for instance. We have the CCC and Catholicism, which, while they are probably the *most* helpful sources, can be cumbersome.

All of this to introduce my question: Can anyone give me a list of their favorite apologetics books?

Hi Tina,

I love the Catholic Sourcebook for all kinds of trivia type stuff as well as the Catechism. But the Beginning Apologetics series by San JuanCatholic Seminars is perfect for all the point by point investigation you are doing for your friend and your own faith.

I've used them in a mother's prayer group, for Apologetics training for my high school aged children, to loan to non-Catholic friends, to help Catholic friends find certain answers; they've been invaluable!

There are 7 in the series and I see they will soon be issuing a new book on the End Times. Fantastic!! BTW, Book 1 just happens to be called How to Explain and Defend the Catholic Faith

The books that I turn to again and again are:
Straight Answers I and II by Father William Saunders
Beginning Apologetics from San Juan Seminars
Faith Facts from Emmaus Road Publishing

I also like to use the CUF website (cuf.org). You can ask them a question if you can't find the answer elsewhere and they will answer you back with the references and research to back up their answer.

Take a look at Madrid's other books as well: Why is that in Tradition and Answer me This. You might find some more specific answers in those two books.

There is a $2 sheet of Apologetics that identifies Bible passages. It's a great reference for you though not something I'd just hand to someone else. I think Catholic Answers sells it. I'll try to find out more about where it is from if you are interested

In addition to the Faith Facts book that Molly mentioned you can find a large number of the individual Faith Facts tracts on-line at the CUF site. Each deals with one particular topic. When a question comes up I can almost always find a tract that addresses it, either here or in the Catholic Answers Tracts.

I also really like the Catholic For a Reason series that Emmaus Road publishes.      CUF catalog
