Hi everyone,

I hope you all can help me with this one. Without going into too much detail or giving out too much personal information...
I have a member of my extended family who needs a book about forgiveness. This person is having trouble forgiving something done in the past. She would like to get through this, but is just unable to get past the anger. She is afraid of being hurt again or someone else being hurt by another family member who is VERY repentant and would like to be forgiven. If you need more details, we'll see what I can do. Please let me know if you have any book ideas to help her through this tough time.

Left to Tell I highly recommend, Catholic and powerful! About a Rwandan lady who survived the shocking atrocities, with most of her family brutally killed.

The other book I recommend which is not Catholic is Forgiving the Dead Man Walking - there are some powerful words in there that are very compelling to embrace true forgiveness under difficult circumstances.

One book highly recommended by a friend is Forgiving the Unforgivable by David Stoop, Ph.D.

It is Christian in orientation (not Catholic) but seems very practical as well as pastoral. He includes True/False quizes ex: #4: I should try to forgive others quickly and completely. Answer: False: True forgiveness is an internal process that cannot be rushed. Then qualifies on severity of offense i.e., bumping into someone v. physical abuse.

He also has flow charts, The Path of Denial, The Path of Btterness, The Path of Forgiveness. I'd be happy to type out a selection of those if you want, but can't at the moment, because I'm rushing on some things. Let me know, and I'll give you a sample - just a bit so as not to compromise copyright issues.

I haven't read it, but it like I said, it did come highly recommended by a dear Catholic friend whom I trust.

Another good book is (cannot remember the name of the book and my copy is loaned out, but it is sold by Ignatius Press)about the First black American priest. He was born a slave, experienced prejudice within and without the church for almost his entire life, and was turned away from U.S. seminiaries over and over, because of the color of his skin. He was admitted to a seminary in Rome (for the education of priests from missionary territories which the U.S. was) when he was willing to be sent to Africa as a missionary. As it turned out, the superiors decided to send him to the U.S. and told him this on the morning of his ordination.
He served faithfully over long periods of time, repeatedly experiencing injustices, yet always choosing to forgive and to be obedient to his superiors. The message of forgiveness was pretty clear to me, but it wasn't blatant or preachy.

Thank you all so much for these recommendations! I really think the Forgiving the Unforgivable will help most, in this situation, but I appreciate ALL the recommendations

I KNEW I could count on you all. You ALWAYS come through! I had forgotten the Left to Tell book. A friend recommended it as inspiring reading once not long ago. I just put it on reserve at my library - thanks for the reminder
