I called to sign up for the new Parish that is starting (just 5 minutes from our home!) and Father Jamnicky answered the phone. That is surprising enough because we come from a Parish where you practically have to give blood to get a word in with our Pastor...javascript:AddSmileyIcon('')
Anyway, imagine my excitement when after giving our name and address I hear this statement,"So, when are you usually home? I'd love to stop by and meet the kids?" "and have you had the house blessed? I can do that too"
***stunned silence on my end***
Well, that would be great come on over any time."
So I excitedly hang up and tell the kids. The oldest looks around and says,"Well, Mom, we'll have to start cleaning" He's right of course, we've just got back from camping and have let the clutter go a little wild. But, more importantly- the house blessing. Doesn't this include every room in the house?
And I've never had a Priest in my house before at all. My FIL told me to relax, he said," that Priests in Chicago and Ireland do this all the time, and chances are he'll have seen worse than our carpet stains."
So, I'm up early, we've canceled school lite for the day and I'm hoping Father calls tomorrow and not today.
And for anyone in Northern Illinois St. Raphael the Archangel Parish will be open August 11. We'll have Mass in a remodeled barn on the property until we raise enough funds for a Church. Father also gave my name to a reporter from the Chicago Tribune and he interviewed me and the kids about the new Parish, the article should be in the paper this Sunday. Just wanted to share our exciting news...

Jen,
YES! Most priests will come and bless ALL the rooms (including bathrooms ). We had a priest come and do EVERY corner of the house - he blessed all the appliances, water heater, sump pump, air conditioning....you get the idea. I'm sure he will understand if some of your rooms are not clean, especially since he did not make an appointment, but said he would come by.
I think it will be wonderful for you and your family! My family likes to do a house blessing along with our Epiphany celebration every year (Jenn blogged about it here and here).
Congratulations on your article! If you have the link, you should post it!

We had our House blessed and it was our first time having a Priest to our Home as well. Yes, he did bless every room, but he was so wonderful, and it was a nice chance to get to know him one on one for a change! Relax and just enjoy getting to know your new Pastor!

House Blessings are great. We had ours done by the priest who married us. Not only did he bless every room, but he threw blessed salt in the corners of all of my cabinets and closets, he blessed all religious pictures and statues, the door frames too and he said a prayer of exorcism. Very cool!
He also had my son assist him with the incense (like an altar server) even though he was only 5 years old.

That's so great about the article and Father offering to do the house blessing.
It might be too short notice, but sometimes Enthronement of the Sacred Heart can be incorporated with the House Blessing, also.
