April 16 marks Pope Benedict XVI's 80th birthday.
You can leave birthday greetings here.
If you have some time read over his sermons from Holy Week, and his Urbi et Orbi message. I just blogged about how excited I am with Pope Benedict's teachings...it's such a blessing for our faith, and teaching to our children.

Ooops...I wanted to ask what do plan on doing to do for his birthday? Some German/Bavarian foods and traditions? Share!

Sounds good to me. Last year for Easter (or maybe it was two years ago) we had Eggs Benedict with artichoke hearts and smoked salmon....it was a Martha Stewart Living recipe...

Jenn, what about some springerle with a St Nicholas cutter?
We will be at a homeschooling camp on the day but if we were home it would be nice to have german sausages on a crusty bread roll with LOTS sauerkraut like at the German food vans we see at festivals.
Even our children love sauerkraut, so this would be a treat!

Is his birthday on the 15th or the 16th? My FIL always says he share his birthday with the Pope, but its on the 16th.

I believe it is the 16th.
And don't forget to play some Mozart! He is a favorite of our Pope!
There is a stamp coming out here in Germany honoring our Pope. I will definitely get some and then write some real letters.

Thanks for the correction. I presumed the 15th because that's when I read he's saying the Mass for his 80th, but I got it wrong. So I have another day to plan!
I'd love to see a picture book about the role of a pope, with some pictures of two last popes.

It looks like the Vatican is having a week long celebration. I don't see why you can't start a day early too!

These ideas are just wonderful! How amazing that the 16th happens to also be eggs benedict day!
I bought an apple strudel to serve after Mass today (my folks always come back for coffee). I have red and white carnations for the table in honor of Divine Mercy Sunday, too (red for our sins, white for forgiveness - an idea from The Catholic Parent's Book of Feasts ).

Oh, I would too, Jenn. Did anyone see the special on EWTN called The Year with Two Popes? I watched with the boys on JPII's bday, and though I accidentally deleted it before we saw it all, what I saw was well done.

Here is another idea to celebrate the Holy Father's birthday tomorrow. How about German Chocolate Cake - homemade! This is a great recipe for German Chocolate Cake.
It is my mom's favorite cake. I remember growing up and watching my dad make it for her.

Jenn, thank you so much for sharing this.
We'll have schnitzel & german potato salad. Both are easy & quick. I like easy! A Blackforest cake will be dessert.
We'll also put together a (easy ) notebook page with Pope Benedict's picture, map and flag of Germany, and a prayer in German.
My mom is from the same region as Our Holy Father.
I've invited her and I'll ask her to say a Hail Mary and/or Our Father in German and talk about going to church in Germany as a child.

Oh, how fun! Aren't we blessed to live our lives under such wonderful spiritual leaders? I'll have to dust off some Bavarian recipes...spaetzle mit kaese...yum!
(Our Holy Father confirmed one of my Bavarian friends...she showed me the photos...how cool is that?!)

Such great ideas. That is so cool about the Eggs Benedict day! I'm not feeling very creative or adventurous, got a rotten head cold. Got any recipe suggestions for chicken besides soup?
Nancy, was he Cardinal Ratzinger at the time, or the Pope?
Dawn, I missed that special. I'll have to look for that...I hope they'll play it again.

I posted some links this morning. Enchanted Learning has a whole German theme page, recipes, a really interesting interview with his cousin, etc... Not sure if any of them will help.
