Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

OK, I'm showing my extreme ignorance here (be nice to me, I'm a convert! ) but my parish is singing some of the mass in Latin during Lent and no one in my family knows them. I know one of them is the Agnes Dei and one is the Sanctus and I'm pretty sure there are one or two more.

Is there a CD I can buy to learn these? And will the tunes be the same from parish to parish so that I can trust the CD will be singing the same notes that my parish is?

Kyrie as well, most likely. (usually Gloria too, but not in Lent or Advent.)

The trouble is there are so many tunes and there all glorious! But I'd put my bets on it being on of four Masses....   Missa Simplex, Missa de Angelis, possibly Missa Orbis Factor or then there is the Missa Quadragesima the Mass for Lent and Advent.

Here is a cd from Ignatius Press that has both the simplex and de Angelis on it, Sublime Chant..just noticed it is on back order with this store, might need to do a internet search on the title to track it down somewhere else in time.

It is good to hear the chants on cd but this also might be helpful, the chant notation to follow, if you can find out the Mass beforehand you can take the right notation along

Chant notation for Missa Orbis Factor

Chant notation for Missa de Angelis

Chant notation for Missa Quadragesima..use the second Kyrie on this page.

Couldn't find notation for simplex but it definately one you can follow by ear..it is simple!

Books, is is chant, or song? Either way, the lyrics are easy to find, but you'll need to know either the composer or the chant number in order to find a CD.

I really like the CD our music minister has produced. You can read about it here. A Guide to Gregorian Chant

How wonderful Elizabeth to see a parish supporting the chant like that! I chant the Latin at the First Friday Mass held at my old parish but the Mass is not offered by the parish priest, they have a guest priest, but after two years of doing this, the parish priest has asked that I no longer sing Latin only in English..

I just found that information yesterday when I saw ST. Veronica's listed on the CMA website under the Ward method. Fabulous work she is doing. Our parish is losing our wonderful music director. I'm praying for someone who will follow the church's teaching on this.

Adoremus Hymnal has a cd companion that has all the chants and hymns. It's available from Ignatius Press. Your church is probably using the parts of the Mass that were designated by Pope Paul VI in his Jubilate Deo -- basic Latin Gregorian chant that every Catholic should know. Some are from Missa de Angelis, most others are from Mass of the Dead because of their simplicity.

Another good resource is Julia Fogassy's Minimum Repertoire of Plain Chant & Latin Prayers of the Mass and Rosary (scroll a little more than halfway down the page).

These are very nice, simple and useful resources.

Minimum Repertoire of Plain Chant
If you can't sing the Ordinary of the Mass in Latin, or if you want to learn the most treasured Latin hymns, then this CD and booklet are for you. In 1974, the Sacred Congregation for Divine Worship established the minimum repertoire of sacred chant that all faithful Catholics should know--and its all here. The booklet offers modern musical notation, English translations, and brief historical sketches of the origin, authorship, and history of each piece. Selections include one Mass setting, ten Latin hymns and three antiphons. Some of the titles are: Te Deum, Veni Creator Spiritus, Ubi Caritas, Adoro te Devote, Tantum Ergo, Regina Caeli. Book is piral bound, softcover. 40-minute CD with unaccompanied, female voice.

Latin Prayers of the Mass and Rosary
Booklet and CD. Learn to chant the Church's most familiar Latin prayers. Prayers are both spoken and chanted. Solo, male voice. Booklet displays prayers in Latin and English on facing pages, with line-by-line matching text. Prayers of the Mass are taken from the 1962 Roman Missal. Includes: Kyrie (Greek), Ave Maria, Agnus Dei, Gloria, Pater Noster, Confiteor, Credo, Sanctus, Salve Regina, Domine Non Sum Dignus, more.

OK I am bias towards Our Father's House products but I have used these for years and like them a lot.

This is what the Jubilate Deo intended. I didn't know that was available at Our Father's House -- thanks!

Those of you who appreciate Rosemary's work on promoting Latin in our parish, I hope you have let her and Father know that.

Oh, I have! She's even offered to teach my children privately, as she has offered to other parishioners. They are such blessings.

We just had the same thing happen.    The pastor has asked for English, though the visiting priest and the curate are both cool with the Latin. Hey, there are 8 Sunday Masses, and Libby sings three of them. Odds are that Msgr. is only there for one of those Masses every three weeks. Funny thing is, the people all like it, but I think it confused Msgr. After the Agnus Dei, he almost began, "Ecce..."

Oh no...I'm more confused than ever now. Are all these cd's different recordings of the same tunes? If I ask our priest what we are singing, will I be able to figure out which cd to buy?

I feel like a complete dope about this...but its even more embarrassing to be in mass when almost everyone around us knows the songs.

Books -- I was checking out these CDs, so that the boys and I could listen to some chant at home (in light of the new exhortation!) All of the CD choices by Annie, Michele, Jenn and Elizabeth look great. I'm trying to figure out which one to get...I may get a few!

And I think if you just ask your pastor which Masses he plans on singing (angels, Jubilate Deo, pro defunctis, etc.) -- then you can decide which CD is best. Most of the recommended CDs have the specific Mass listed. Adoremus does not, but it's got at least five chant Masses in its hymnal.

But here's my question: I've never heard of this Mass. What Mass # is it?

I've just checked my Gregorian Missal and my Liber Cantualis and I'm a bit confused too. What I have been calling 'simplex' is in fact called 'primativa' in the LC but it is not altogether in the book grouped like the rest of the Masses, the Kyrie is on pg17 with the Gloria but the Sanctus is on pg26 and Agnus Dei on pg 29 - so not together at all, yet they do belong together and form this Mass as we know it.

So the Primativa Mass comprises of:

Kyrie XVI
Gloria XV
Sanctus XVIII
Agnus Dei XVIII

So it is not like "Missa de Angelis" that is Missa VIII or Cum Jubilo Missa IX... so I probably haven't helped matters here      maybe someone else who knows more about the formation of these Masses might shed a bit more light.

Ok, I can add a little bit more, it seems it does not have a mass number and just referred to as 'Primativa' from looking this site showing the layout of the Liber Cantualis....I think I muddied the waters by referring to this Mass as simplex.

The Jubilate Deo Mass Jenn mentioned is the Primativa Kyrie, Sanctus and Agnus Dei with the Missa de Angelis Gloria.

The Primativa Mass has the above but also the Primativa Gloria.

I only know this from singing with people who are using the Adoremus Hymnal~a beautiful book - but I don't know how this Hymnal fits in with relation to the Gregorian Chant books, once again, someone might shed some light.

Sorry for my mix up!

While I think of it, Books - did your parish use the chant this Sunday past? If so, were you able to join in with the chant, how did the parishioners go as well?

I don't think its chant...I think its just songs in Latin. I haven't had a chance to ask the pastor yet (we are still new to the parish and I feel weird just walking up and asking him ). It seems to me that at least 1/2 the parish knows the songs, so I'm not the only one, but I'd like to be one of the ones 'in the know!'

Books, maybe you might ask the music director? He or she could probably tell you what book to use, or where to look online for whatever music you need. I hope you find it!

Thanks aussieannie! And the Ignatius CD you mentioned, labeled their parts as from the Mass Simplex -- so it wasn't just your reference!! I'm glad you could point out what it was!! I just had never heard of it referred to as that!!

Maryan, Yes, I was talking to my choir director about this Mass last night, it is known as both - it a compliation of parts from different Masses and was formulated as a simple Mass last century some time as an initiative to encourage congregation participation.
