I've been dragging my feet about getting instruments for my little guys...mostly because of the noise!  But I know that's not a good reason, but I'm not sure where to start... I've seen recorders, drums, lap harps, harmonicas etc. Thought about violin, piano... too complicated and costly? I dont' know!
I'm looking for my 3 1/2 ds and 5 ds -- their fine motor skills are not super great, so I don't want to get them something that would be too frustrating... We love to sing and listen to all sorts of various CDs, but I thought it would be fun to up our music experience with an instrument...
Does anyone have any suggestions for the novice here?

Do you want "real" instruments, or are you more interested in giving them the chance to experiment with all the sounds?
If it's the latter, I recommend anything by Woodstock Percussion. They have some great quality instruments geared toward kids, from xylophones, harmonicas, drums, rattles, accordions and ukeleles. We've been very pleased with everything we've gotten from them, (with the exception of the drums and tambourines--my kids seem to break the skins very easily  ).

I'm not sure...Maybe both?? I like this site that you've recommended and see several possibilities! Thanks for the forewarning about drum and tambourine skins -- I can see them not making it past the first week! I also like that it's wooden instruments and not plastic

Our Woodstock ukelele broke pretty quickly, but we have a Bebop childrens' guitar that has held up nicely to the rock-star antics of our musically precocious 2.5 year old.

My sons started recorder and Irish tin whistle when in kindergarten. We also keep a wooden xylophone and several other percussion instruments that seem to be a hit with boys: tambourine, triangle, maracas, irish bodrhan drum, etc.. Oh, and a lap harp.

I was thinking percussion instruments, too...that could be a whole 'nother rabbit trail if you study them, their history, and make your own....

Thanks for the percussion suggestions - Rebecca, I noticed that you mentioned a lap harp. Does you 6 ds have a hard time with the finer motor skills of a lap harp? Just wondering...I'd seen them, but didn't know if my oldest would be able to do that without being frustrated.
