Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My dd, age 9, went to see the Moscow Ballet perform the Nutcracker last night. She came away dazzled. She went looking this a.m. for our Nutcracker CDs and discovered one was broken in half--we have this recording but would love to take recommendations for other recordings as well...I hope to buy a new copy this week sometime...MacBeth, anyone else have any versions they love?

Thanks!

Oh, my. I have a terrible confession . I can't bear the Nutcracker.

Whew. Now that that's out in the open, I just heard a recording that I love! Disclaimer: A jazz trombone player is visiting, introducing us to much different music.

Duke Ellington took The Nutcracker (and Peer Gynt, too!), and jazzed them up. Now, I may be a purist, but this is just fun. For example, he took the Waltz of the Flowers and plays a 4/4 time over the 3/4 time, and voila! Jazz Nutcracker!

I do have a copy of the Nutcracker played by the NY Phil under Leonard Bernstein. You really can't go wrong with this Nutcracker recording, though I am sure a Russian orchestra might argue.

Anyone else have a favorite?

Only slightly related, I hope it's okay to post here. I've never seen the Nutcracker but on video. 15-yo and 4-yo would love to go to the live one next month, but my 2 boys don't want to go because they think it's too girly. I've told them that Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jean Claude Van Damme both took ballet lessons, but that did not convince them. Should I just let it go and make it a girls' night out? I'm thinking they would REALLY enjoy it once they're there.

Hey Stef...

What guy could resist a ballet with a Rat King? If that does not convince them, nothing will! Paul has enjoyed it, though he wishes the Rat King had more action scenes.
