Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Anna Mary Robertson Moses, also known as Grandma Moses, was an American Folk artist. One of the most notable things about Grandma Moses is that she started painting in her 70's, after leaving a career in embroidery due to arthritis. May we all be so motivated to try something new at that age! She spent the bulk of her life as a farmers wife and mother of 5 children. Grandma Moses lived to the age of 101.

Here are some links on the life and art of Grandma Moses

from Wikipedia

Short biography and activities for children

click around on left sidebar for artworks, etc

Please share any good links you find on Grandma Moses - I seem to be having trouble finding a good variety.

Pictures to come!

Amy, Granda Moses is one of my favorite artists (in fact I'm trying to design a template for my blog that has a Grandma Moses feel to it; sadly I'm not as talented.    )! Great choice for September! Thanks so much for doing this.

Off to download art for the screensaver....

This is great!!!

I was wondering if there would be an artist and a composer posted for Sept. This makes picture study so much easier for me.

Thank you.

I love the one titled "Waiting for Christmas."

It is set as the wallpaper for our dining room computer right now.

Thanks!

The Higher Up and Further In blog has Grandma Moses on her Flikr artist study block. Click on the link above and scroll down to "Featured Artist" on the sidebar on the right.

Adding a couple books to this Artist Study:

Booklist from Amazon

Picture Book: Grandma Moses, by Alexandra Wallner.

Grandma Moses: Painter of Rural America...a satisfactory biography that my 4th graders read and enjoyed. There aren't any pictures...it's just text.

Barefoot in the Grass is a more advanced biography of her....for older readers.

And, some fun activities here.

Dropping In On Grandma Moses. I haven't seen any of these, but just requested it from my library.

- yes good one. Alexandra Wallner has several excellent picture book biographies of women artists and authors.

Would also be interesting to look at her grandson's work - great picture book illustrator.
