We started a fun project today -- my 5 yod had gottent he DK book, The Illustrated Book of Ballet Stories by Barbara Newman. This beautiful book, which includes basic ballet info, has the synopses of 5 ballets -- Giselle, Coppelia, Sleeping Beauty (NOT the Disney version

), Swan Lake and Nutcracker.

I then went online with the Library and requested DVD or VHS of these ballets -- and these are done by the Royal Ballet in London or Bolshoi, etc. Ballets we couldn't afford to see even if the troupes came to Greenville

!

Anyway, we started with Swan Lake today and my 5 yod and 6 yos listened to the synopsis (only about 5 pages but with lots of illustrations and info) then happily watched the ballet which they "understood" because of the well-done synopsis. A great way to merge reading and electronic media to teach the littles!

We have that book, too, Mary! Back when my dd (now 9) was taking ballet and everything out of her mouth was ballet, we read that book quite often. I stumbled upon it accidentally at a homeschool conference in a "don't want anymore"-type book section for $5!

I just requested the book and a Swan Lake DVD (Royal Ballet Company) from the library. Thanks so much for posting this - my girls will love it.

ooh, great topic! will have to delve into this more after Holy Week. 14-yo dd took ballet at 5, but only stayed with it for a year, then switched to gymnastics and didn't want to go back. My very first dream was to be a ballerina (didn't happen as my parents didn't want me "distracted" from regular schooling, ugh) -- so I've always wished one of my daughters would want to be one, even for just a bit.... the 3-yo is talking about "doing ballet" (but her moves look more like karate moves copied from her older siblings

).... a few DVDs and books would be fun to explore. thanks for the suggestions!
