On a tangent to this post I wanted to share this very good video by Jimmy Akin called Are Scary Halloween Costumes, Okay?
I have ponder a lot about what he says in the video over the past few months.
I often think as Women and Mothers we just don't understand a Boys need to explore the idea of "good vs. evil". Jimmy's talk really shed some light on this subject for me. My boys NEED to be playing Cowboys and Indians, Cops and Robbers, etc. so that they can come to terms with evil before it is REAL!
I am really trying to understand how my boys are wired better and boys have certain needs that as a Mother I don't completely understand! (Maybe like how our husband's can't understand our need to talk things to death, etc)
Anyway, I just wanted to share and see if anyone had any insight they wanted to share.....

Interesting, Betsy.
While not exactly on topic, it reminds me of the trip to the local art museum that exhibits NC Wyeth's illustrations from Treasure Island and frequently has programs catering to the whole pirate theme. I've probably told this story before, but anyway, one of the reading/touring/crafting mornings was "pirate day" where the children were invited to dress as pirates, etc... The dosan leading our tour had the children describe the pirate in the picture and name things pirates would have. She was emphasizing standing like a pirate, parrots, treasure, etc...
And then when the boys in the group said, "guns!!" she practically dismissed them saying, "oh, we'll, I don't like guns..."
Really? Pirates are fun but you don't like guns??? I really wanted to say something snippy like, "You DO know what a pirate is, don't you?"
I don't understand why you would glamorize the pirates, their buried treasure, talking prrots, manner of speech, etc... and ignore the fact that they were BAD men who murdered and stole to get all that treasure? All in the name of being against violence and "guns."
It is just a strange modern phenomenon to come so close to recognizing the childhood, and especially boyhood, fascination with villains, good vs. evil, etc..., and instead of facing that head on in a human way (as Robert Louis Stevenson actually did in Treasure Island), they, if I may use a crass term, castrate it to make it fluffy and fuzzy and happy.

Lindsay,
Not off topic at all! This is exactly what I am talking about!
Maybe crass, but I love the term "castrate" to describe this type of issue. It's if we are taking away the "manliness" to help us as women deal with it better.

Nice video.. not too long and I must say that I agree with him. I tend to ban the halloween costumes that are "confusing"; the vampire heros and such (so all vampires) because modern society has taken an historically evil creature (fictional) and made it "the good guy". But by the same token we allow skeletons and "gory" saints and the like.
I love how he compares childish play with puppy or kittens playing. I actually call the "wrestling" my little boys do (generally on my bed!?!?!) "puppy wrestling" because they're just climbing all over each other.. not so much trying to push the other guy down as just get on top.
Boys really thrive with physical challenge. Not just playing cops and robbers but real challenge. Hiking and backpacking and digging and moving stuff and chopping wood and shoveling snow.. anything that is hard work that they need to "conquer". Also why sports is such a good thing for boys with less access to physical challenges. Though I have to say that I think how some of the adults handle the sports can be way over the top.
Anyway, I do see real good things from my boys when they have the chance to "be boys".
