Just read a nice picture book that had a connection to this artist and former slave - Juan de Pareja.

Grandma's Gift by Eric Velasquez

First thing I had seen in children's literature about him besides the chapter book, I, Juan de Pareja by Elizabeth Borton de Trevino

I thought the two would be a nice basis for a study of the artist.

I think I included it in a list of the books that received awards (Caldecott, Newberry, etc.) for a recent year but I hadn't yet read it myself.
