I need to buy a music stand for my ds. His music is all in a black 3 ring binder, which he likes since he can flip to any song he wants (he plays guitar).

The black orchestra/stage stands look very sturdy on Amazon but cannot fold up to be stored. The silver foldable ones look like they might not be wide enough to hold a notebook securely (wide enough on the ledge part).

My ds is pretty intense and gets easily frustrated. I am trying to avoid buying a stand that will have him moaning or frustrated each time he sets it up and uses it.

Any recommendations?

The silver foldable one will not hold a binder unless it has a very narrow spine. Also, the weight of the binder will cause the stand to be unstable.

The black stand we bought at Guitar Center is a pain to carry around - the leg section folds/collapses, but the music holding part does not - but I don't regret buying it. I can put our binder on it (for Irish music practice/performances) and never worry about it falling off or about the stand toppling over.

We have foldable ones that would not hold a binder. Could you buy the black one for home, and when he plays use a thinner binder on a silver foldable one? He would ony have the music he would actually play in it.

We have both here, and I agree with both Angi's and Nancy's observations about both. We use both stands at various times. The black stand is used most often when the kids play guitar because the kids have large binders of music, and they also tend to stack music books on the black stand. When I have multiples playing guitar at once, they use both stands.

I do like that the silver stand folds up and out of the way....but............it never is....folded up and out of the way, I mean.    There is ALWAYS someone playing music or writing music in the house, so it's always out anyway.

One of my daughters uses the Peak SMS-20 Music Stand for violin. It folds easily, comes with a storage bag, and has stood up well to my younger children fiddling with it. It is less expensive at Shar Music. I am linking both so that you can read the reviews.

I will ask my daughter what she thinks about having a binder on it when she wakes up.

Thanks, everyone. It has been really helpful to hear your comments.
I think I will pass on the silver stand....too likely to tip.

I like the looks of the Peak stand.

My daughter said that her 1" or 1 1/2" binder works well on her Peak music stand, as long as she removes all of the violin papers and books that she has on the stand first. She isn't the most organized person in the world.

We have had Peak SMS 32 one for a couple of weeks and so far it is SO MUCH BETTER than our other ones. The people at Music Stands Alone are super knowledgeable and find a good fit for your children / instrument / use / household, etc.
