Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

As I toodled around the Internet this morning, looking for good sites to supplement our American studies next year, I stumbled across the American Gallery site. What a fantastic resource for the study of American art! An extensive listing of artists and images of their work is featured.

I'm going to use this site next year both for our American geography studies (all the great nature paintings, especially Bierstadt) and for our artist studies (the Americans we plan to study next year are Rockwell and Homer).

How could you use this resource?

ETA: Do NOT let your children visit this site unattended. There are some very problematic links to other sites on the right sidebar...some are great, some are definitely not. The field of art does include explicit material, iykwim. This is a site for you as parent educator to browse and select from.

Looks great!! Thanks for sharing and for the warning.

We were very fortunate through HSLDA to take advantage of the Picturing America program. We received all the artwork in the site, huge laminated pieces with a teachers manual. Every other week I picked a piece, hung it on the wall, and would read the information from the manual. The girls would then either write about the piece or try to replicate it in their art journal. We have not gone through the whole collection as we've just finished Civil War and are concentrating on American Indians. I tried to find other pieces by the same artist to display on alternate weeks as well. We also seemed to spend a longer time on Audobon and Hudson River School.

Over all this was a great resource for studying American Art.
