Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My teens are trying to learn about all of the processes of making a movie from script writing to final product. The end result will be a movie about people making a movie about King David with a Princess Bride-ish twist. it looks to be very creative and funny! This has been a fun project! We just have to get the music down and polish it up a bit before filming starts late this spring.

They would like to know more about music and how to put together their own scores. Does anyone know of any software that they can use that would teach them about this kind of thing? They are also looking for something that will help them edit their film.

Can anyone recommend anything else to them that will help them have a polished finished product?

TIA!

that sounds like a lot of fun, esp. the Princess Bride-ish twist!

my kids recommend Garage Band on the Mac. i'll ask my 19-yo what she uses on her laptop (her laptop is called "NotAMac" ).

My kids made the most HILARIOUSLY RIDICULOUS movie using imovie. It was written, directed, shot (with their own little digital camera) one scene at a time, acted, edited, clipped, (all done by them) and then they laid tracks of sound effects and music on top of the movie using Garage Band. There are bloopers, too! The whole movie is several minutes long. I'm cracking up just thinking about it. Think James Bond meets Nancy Drew.

I know that only helps if you have a mac...but I thought I'd mention the program they used. When they started this little movie making adventure they were 11 and 7, and they made the whole thing completely on their own...what that means is that I can't tell you how they did any of it. I just know I'm going to belly laugh anytime they turn it on. I am pleased to say that I have a cameo appearance in the movie!

For upper high schoolers interested in movie making, Dr. Stan Williams book The Moral Premise is good. But mature. Parents should decide whether their high schooler is ready for it.     Here is his blog Crossing Nineveh

Dr. Williams is on fire for spreading the Catholic faith and turning the culture towards life through media. He has been teaching my high school boys and their friends story writing and some production. It is amazing how they can break down a story plot or critique a movie.

Is anyone (like you, dear Jennifer Mac) interested in sharing your videos? My girls are so interested in seeing your work!

My oldest knows all about this kind of thing. He has a music background so we don't know of any books that would teach how to put together a score, but he uses software to put it all together. He's out of town but when he gets back I'll ask about score and video/sound editing software.
