Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Wanted to post about a new picture book we read recently - Palazzo Inverso. The author, D. B. Johnson, introduces readers to a fictional builder's apprentice named Mauk (which happens to be M.C. Escher's nickname).

Escher is the 20th century graphic designer/artist famous for his mathematically inspired works that play with our perception. The picture book is very clever - reads through as one story then when you get to the end you turn it upside down and continue reading back to where you started with the same illustrations but perceived differently since they are upside down. It's really hard to explain. You have to read it. It is a nice introduction to Escher for young ones. Then follow up with looking as some of his art for the perception tricks.

I think my ds would love this! He loves building legos (or any other medium: wood, boxes, rocks... ) and recently he is enjoying drawing many angled/straight line shaped buildings and designs. I have to admit I had never heard of Escher before. I love the gray scale of the book illustrations. Putting on my library loan list! Thanks.
