I'd like to put together an art unit on the Vatican. There are so many books on the Vatican for adults; can anyone recommend anything for kids?

I think that any of the adult coffee table books would be great for kids, too. They don't have to read the text but the photographs are so stunning and would give them a good sense of the art.

There are these children's books that focus specifically on the Sistine Chapel. In looking at books specifically written for children on Vatican art the Sistine Chapel is what is usually presented.

The Vatican Museum's website is very good. You can go on "virtual tours" of many of the rooms.

I was wondering what you would want to cover for a Vatican unit? Just the actual Vatican City-State? The history of it? The papacy? St. Peter's? The Vatican Museum?

This could be such an interesting study, but vast, as studying some artists and pope's lives the history of the Vatican as a country and the Papal authority.

A book printed in 1980-81 by the Daughters of St. Paul I recently found A Visit to the Vatican for Young People text by Donald W. Wuerl and Michael Wilson, illustrated by Piero Cipolat. This would be a chapter book. It's very nicely done.

I was thinking it would be nice to learn about the major works of art in St. Peter's, a quick trip through the Sistine Chapel and learn something about the architecture in and around Vatican City. I've been to Rome and Vatican City; you could live there and study for years and not see everything!! I'm just looking for a little bit of familiarity for my kids.
