Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi all
I'm a little lost here....I was able to purchase "An Intro to the Classics" CD set on different composers. Are there books that go with it? I seem to thought so but can't find them?
Thanks for the help..I know I can just put on CD for them to listen to but wanted to know if there was something to reinforce it.....

Hi lovemy4!

I moved your post to Arts in the Everyday so that others with this CD set might be able to chime in with how they use it in their homes for more ideas for you.

I'm not sure which series you're referring to in "Intro to the Classics." Is it the Music Masters set? Or, is it the CD series which accompanies How to Introduce Your Child to Classical Music? Or something totally different?

I'm thinking its the series Emmanuel Books offers with How to Introduce Your Child to Classical Music. If so, I suppose I just answered your question...in that this book works well with this series, but truthfully it would work well with any set of CD's on classical music. I reviewed this book here.

Here are some other books we enjoy that help flesh out composers during our studies here. These books can be used with any CD series.

Minute Sketches of Great Composers, copyright 1932, by Eva Hansl and Helen Kaufmann - this is a great book!! I discovered this book and the one below because we really enjoy Helen Kaufmann. She wrote 2 books in the Signature series of books which I enjoy collecting, The Story of Beethoven, and The Story of Haydn. Both books are excellent, so I started looking to see if she had written any more. That's when I discovered this book and the one below, which is actually a part of a series of little books on music. (More on that in a minute.) Minute Sketches of Great Composers is just that, brief biographies written in a lovely, engaging style of some of the greatest composers. Each composer has a full page black and white illustration done by Samuel Nisenson along with the composers signature underneath their portrait. I enjoy reading from this aloud before we begin studying a new composer. The bio has some great info, but not so much that it loses my younger students. And, though long out of print, it is easily found and very inexpensively purchased. I think I found my copy for $1.

The Story of One Hundred Great Composers, copyright 1943, by Helen Kaufmann, is Book 1 of a diminutive 4 book set, entitled The Little Music Library all authored by Helen Kaufmann. First, I'll give a brief review of The Story of One Hundred Great Composers - this is a tiny little book, but its contents are different from the brief biography sketches offered in Minute Sketches. I find them to be a little meatier, and my high schooler really enjoys these brief bios. I have not read every single bio yet, but of the ones I have, I appreciate the respect with which the author speaks of the Catholic Church, often referring to her as "Mother Church", and acknowledging the importance and significance of music in the Church. I wonder if Ms. Kaufmann was Catholic? This book, and in fact this small 4 book series, is quite small, each book being only about 5 1/4" x 3 1/2".

The series of books in The Little Music Library is equally wonderful. When I stumbled on them, I couldn't resist, though I have not yet used them in my lesson plans. I intend for them to be a part of my high schooler's music appreciation. The series consists of 4 books including:
** The Story of One Hundred Great Composers
** The Little History of Music
** The Little Dictionary of Musical Terms
** The Little Guide to Music Appreciation
Each book, though small, is packed with wonderful information written in a lovely way. Very engaging...for us anyway! These would be suitable for any musically inclined student, or for any musical appreciation course. I find them wonderful because I do not have a music background/talent, but find them completely accessible and unintimidating.

The Gift of Music: Great Composers and their Influence by Jane Stuart Smith and Betty Carlson - this is regularly used resource here. I find it immensely helpful in providing a little more detail and depth for me and for my high schooler about particular composers. I also really enjoy how they point out particular features of certain pieces of a composer, as well as suggest pieces that one should especially listen to because of significance. It's a favorite!

Hope this gives you a few books to consider no matter which CD set you've chosen to use as part of music appreciation, lovemy4.

Hi! Thanks so much for putting the post in its proper place

It is the Music Masters Set....the one hour narration with music....I don't think it lists the names of the pieces being played so would that work with "How to Introduce your child to Classical Music"?

My kids are 7, 7, and 5 but definitely have an interest in music....must be genetic....and I truly want them to have a great education in music SO, should I buy the other set instead to use with the book? I mean, I guess one can never have too much good music around right?

Edited to say....I probably should have checked all your resources BEFORE posting....thanks A BUNCH.....I am loving all the books you suggested.....now I just havae to pick!

Just wanted to check...did you find something you thought would work??? Still unsure? Can we help more? It sounds like you're really going to enjoy music appreciation this year with your crew!
