Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm pretty sure that Jennifer (mackfam) teaches Art with this book. I love her ideas, so I bought the book.

Jennifer, will you explain how you use the book? Do you just read aloud the pages about the work studied, and then have the kids narrate back? Are they looking at the picture while you read? Are there lesson plans?

Hi Paula!

I do use this book, but not necessarily on a regular basis. I use it either to coordinate something happening in the liturgical year, or with a period of history.

There are no lesson plans in this book; the chapters are short and informative. Very simply, I print or provide the artwork for the lesson, I try to carve out/seek out a quiet moment during the day (when my littles aren't so distracting), and I read aloud from Artfully Teaching the Faith. (I notice that their site containing the free downloads of the art images discussed in the book is down, but they're easily searchable at the Web Gallery of Art.) We discuss the art print and sometimes I ask the children to *interpret* the print on their own with paints in order to display. I do this a lot around the liturgical seasons...like for example the chapter entitled Incarnation which focuses on Fra Angelico's The Annuciation is perfect for a study on or around the Feast of the Annuciation (March 25) or during Advent.

The chapters in the book are short, but they often present material that is intriguing to hunt down as a rabbit trail. For example, in discussing The Annunciation, Mr, Kellmeyer discusses earlier versions of The Annunciation done by Fra Angelico and the many changes this painting underwent in his various versions. How fun to try to dig some of these up and compare them!!!!! They're similar, but each possess individual characteristics that set them obviously apart.

In case it's helpful for others, I'll list the chapters and their coordinating artwork and artist:
Quote:
CREATION - The Creation of Adam - Michelangelo
INCARNATION - The Annunciation - Fra Angelico
PROPHECY - Madonna of the Rocks - Leonardo da Vinci
SACRED SCRIPTURE - Matthew inspired by an angel - Reni
CHURCH - Jesus Gives Peter the Keys - Perugino
SALVATION/LAST THINGS - Last Judgment - Michelangelo
MARY - Virge Aux Anges/The Virgin and Angels - Bougereau
HOLY SPIRIT - Icon of the Trinity - Rublev
MORAL LIFE - Transfiguration - Raphael
REDEMPTIVE SUFFERING - Crucifixion of Peter - Caravaggio
SIN - The Last Supper - Leonardo da Vinci
LITURGY, GRACE, EUCHARIST - Disputation on the Holy Eucharist - Raphael
BAPTISM - Brugge Tryptich - Baptism of Christ - David
MATRIMONY - Marriage at Cana - David
EUCHARIST - Rest on the Flight into Egypt - David
UNITY - The Virgin of Guadalupe - God
