Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was searching for something on Liturgical Press and came across extensive recording of Schola Cantorum of St. Peter the Apostle. Some of the cds look incredible: Advent, 12 Days of Christmas, Christmas to Candlemas, St. Patrick, St. Francis, and some music from the East.

Anyone have experience with these recordings? Feedback?

Ooooh, Jenn, these look really good. I hope someone has some first-hand knowledge of this resource.

Kelly, fingers poised to hit the "Add to Cart" key at Schola Cantorum...

Okay, I'm replying to myself. I searched all over the internet to find samplings of this Schola Cantorum. These are directed by James Michael Thompson, and it's the Schola from St. Peter's in the Loop or now St. Peter the Apostle Church in Chicago. From what I'm hearing, it's fabulous stuff! I want everything done by this director and choir.

This director is well versed in chants, both Byzantine and Roman Catholic ones. He's following the true dictates of Vatican II, but I also love the Eastern rite chants. Everything is gorgeous!!! There is a mixture of men and women's voices, a cappella and with accompaniment (organ usually), modern and old, it's lovely!

This director does seem to get around. As all good things seem to come from Pittsburgh (GO STEELERS! ), he is currently the Director of the Metropolitan Cantor Institute in the Byzantine Catholic Archeparchy of Pittsburgh and Professor at Byzantine Catholic Seminary of SS. Cyril and Methodius.

So on to the samplings: J.S. Paluch have a few recordings, (bio on this site) some of these samplings are faulty, but you get the idea:

And this site Liturgica.com is one that I FINALLY found samplings of the Liturgical Press cds...at least a majority of them.

So now I need a music budget for all these! I have a weakness for chant, especially when recordings give such a variety, so I don't get overloaded with just men or women's chants.

The blog (yes, yet another one!) by the choir director for our Latin Mass often has music and links of interest, too.

The Schola Cantorum recordings look great, Jenn. Thanks for all the great links!

Great blog, MacBeth! I happened to find reference to the above-mentioned Prof. Thompson here in your director's blog! It links to another blog, but the subject matter "What makes a rite a rite?" is quite interesting!

Kelly,

Which cds did you get and can I have a review? Do you like them?

Bumping. I still enjoy this music.

My favorite is The Simple Kyriale, although the English parts of the Mass do not reflect the new translation.

The blog that MacBeth linked to is no longer here (Recovering Choir Director by Aristotle Esguerra/).
