Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm taking dd (8) to Swan Lake this weekend (her first live ballet). I have the music on CD, and we plan to listen to it. We've read the synopsis online (from the ballet company). Does anyone have other suggestions for how to enhance this experience?

I've seen this ballet twice before and the performances were very different (one happy, one sad; one good, one bad). My daughter loves dance and music. I tried to get good seats, too, because I saw my first ballet at her age and we sat in the last row of L. A.'s Dorothy Chandler pavilion. Sigh. (Giselle)

All suggestions welcome! Thanks!

Nancy,
Try and get your hands on the DK Illustrated book of Classical Ballet Stories. It's been discussed on the board somewhere before, so there is more detail there, BUT...in a nutshell, it's a book and a cd, with the stories of five famous ballets (including Swan Lake) narrated as they are danced, with the music playing along. All my children, even my "cool" 16 year old, listened to these tales and enjoyed the stories and the music. The story line of each ballet is in sync with the ballet music...that is, as the narrator is telling about the evil swan queen, you hear "her" music. When the swan maidens dance onto the stage in the ballet, the action in the narration tells about the dance of the swans. I think this is an excellent recording, and the accompanying book is good, too. We've read the book, and listened to the cd, many times!

Another thing you could do would be to research a little on Tchaikovsky. You dd could listen to the Classical Kids story about "Tchaikovsky comes to America". I think it includes snippets of the Swan Lake music, though the focus of it is more about the composer and his stay in America rather than any particular piece.
